Title: Climate Data Modernization Program

1
Climate Data Modernization Program Historical
Solar Observations - L18 (Continuing)
Dataset at Risk NGDC archives include a variety
of historical solar composite drawings (left) and
solar photographic images that are not readily
accessible by the public. These data provide a
scientific record of the sun that can be
quantitatively compared to current solar
observations. Scope Data rescue solar
observations that currently exist in paper and
film formats. Historical datasets are currently
archived within NGDC or may be contributed
(loaned) as deemed appropriate.

  • FY09 Accomplishments Completed projects
rescued solar sunspot drawings from the USAF
    Solar Optical Observing Network (1979-2008),
solar drawings from the Wendelstein Solar
Observatory (1947-1987), solar drawings from the
    Northwest Observatory (1958-1970) and annual
solar data books from the Greenwich Observatory
    (1888-1976).

FY19 Activities Digitize daily composite solar
drawings to PDF and TIFF from NOAA historical
space weather operations. Digitize to PDF flare
activity reports and related information from the
SWPC and predecessor organizations. Digitize to
PDF and TIFF, SOON daily sunspot reports for
CY2009. Contractor Funding FY09 90,000 FY10 30,

A variety of solar datasets have been data
rescued through CDMP. In FY09 paper records from
the Wendelstein, SOON, and Northwest
observatories were processed and made available
on-line.

New sources of historical solar data FY10
project Space weather operations began within
NOAA with the establishment of the Space
Disturbances Laboratory in 1966. Since then, NOAA
has collected a variety of space environmental
data including H-alpha solar photographs which
were previously rescued through the CDMP and are
currently available on-line. In FY10 we propose
to continue the historical preservation of NOAAs
space weather legacy by digitizing synoptic solar
drawings (1970 to present) which are currently
available only in paper form. We propose to also
digitize NOAAs flare reports and other space
disturbance forecasts.

  • Task Description A variety of solar datasets
have been data rescued through CDMP. In FY09
paper records from the Wendelstein, SOON, and
Northwest observatories have been processed and
    are now available on-line.
  • Task Lead - William Denig, NGDC,
    william.denig_at_noaa.gov, 303-497-6323
  • FY09 Accomplishments The following data rescue
projects were completed in FY09 historical solar
sunspot drawings from the USAF Solar Optical
    Observing Network (1979-2008), historical solar
drawings from the Wendelstein Solar Observatory
(1947-1987), historical solar drawings from the
    Northwest Observatory (1958-1970), annual solar
data books from the Greenwich Observatory
    (1888-1976)
  • Scope of Proposed Work for FY10 - Digitize daily
composite solar drawings to PDF and TIFF from
NOAA historical space weather operations (new
dataset). Digitize to PDF flare activity reports
and related information from the SWPC and
    predecessor organizations (new dataset). Digitize
to PDF and TIFF, SOON daily sunspot reports for
    CY2009 (continuing dataset).
