  • Language Arts
  • Students are grouped into 3 small groups
  • Reading series MacMillan Treasures
  • Spelling and grammar will go along with the
    reading series
  • Testing
  • comprehension and vocabulary test for most
    stories
  • Grammar quizzes given during each chapter with a
    test at the end of each chapter
  • Spelling tests given each week. Most tests will
    include sentences written by students that will
    reflect the meaning of the assigned spelling
    words.

  • Writing
  • The majority of assignments will be done in class
  • Assignments are at the discression of the teacher
  • Step-up to writing program will continue to be
    used
  • Book Club
  • Students will be expected to read additional
    books (about 1 per month)
  • They will complete various assignments/activities
    related to what they have read
  • Each class will be reading a different book each
    month
  • Teachers will provide the students with the books
    they will read

  • Our goal is to cover all of the material in the
    textbook. Therefore, the children may have
    homework every night.
  • The textbook is available on-line at
    www.pearsonsuccessnet.com
  • Student passwords and usernames are included with
    your information
  • Testing
  • Chapter tests will be given at the end of each
    chapter and there will be at least 1 quiz on each
    chapter. Pop quizzes may also be given.
  • Quiz grades will count once and chapter tests
    will count twice .

  • Social Studies
  • Mrs. McCormick
  • Canada and Latin America will be the focus in 5th
    grade
  • U.S. history will also be covered
  • They will begin the year working with
    geographical skills
  • All individual and group projects will be done in
    school throughout the year
  • Notes, vocabulary, and echo-answer questions will
    be completed by students in their copy books.
    These will be graded periodically on
    organization, completeness, neatness, and
    corrections made.
  • Tests and quizzes will be announced several days
    in advance to allow for study time.
  • Current event assignments will also be given
    periodically throughout the year.

  • Life, Earth, and Physical Sciences
  • Lab work and activities will be done for each
    chapter
  • Students are responsible for keeping a science
    notebook (binder). Workbook pages, vocabulary,
    and class notes must be kept in order .
  • Testing
  • There will be a vocabulary quiz and chapter test
    given on most chapters.

  • This year will focus on the 7 sacraments and the
    saints
  • There will be a variety of individual and group
    projects completed throughout the year
  • Grades will be determined by quizzes, tests, and
    projects completed

Homework Policy
  • It is the students responsibility to write down
    all homework assignments in the homework
    organizer.
  • IF a student comes to class without a completed
    homework assignment, he/she will receive a red
    circle in their homework organizer and 5 points
    will be deducted from their homework grade for
    that subject.
  • PLEASE sign near the red circle.
  • The assignment and the signed red circle must be
    returned on the next school day. If this becomes
    a regular pattern, we will call for a conference
    with the student and parent.

Week Ahead
  • The week ahead can be found on the chalkboard in
    each 5th grade classroom. Students will copy this
    into their homework organizers every Friday.
  • It will list most tests, quizzes, and important
    events for the following week.
  • Since we need to be flexible in 5th grade, there
    may be changes or additions to the week ahead.
    The children will be given enough time to study
    any extra information.
  • The week ahead will also appear on each teachers
    web site linked through the schools web site at
    http//www.stmary.pvt.k12.de.us

Friday Folders
  • Graded papers and most office information will be
    sent home in the Friday folder.
  • Please SIGN all papers and return the folder to
    school on MONDAY.
  • We DO NOT stamp papers sign and return since we
    need ALL graded papers returned to school.

Power School
  • Along with the papers you received today is the
    user name and password for your childs grades on
    power school.
  • If your username and/or password is misplaced
    during the year, please contact Mrs. Kerr.
  • I will update power school ONCE a week.

Teacher's Web Pages
  • All teachers at SMM have a web page.
  • Please go to the school web site, click on
    Faculty and find 5A to access my site.
  • Web pages are updated every Friday (or last day
    of the school week) by 245pm.
  • Dont forget to check the SMM web site each week
    for the weekly newsletter.

Field Trips/Money
  • 5A Homeroom Mothers Mrs. Lavelle and Mrs. Rush
  • Check table to sign up for upcoming field trips
    or to send in party supplies during the year
  • Please send any money for school events in a
    marked envelop.
  • Field trip checks should be made out to SMM.

Book Orders
  • Book orders are typically sent out for each
    month.
  • Included with your papers is information on how
    to pay for books orders on-line using a credit
    card.
  • I will also collect money for book orders in the
    classroom.
  • Please make checks payable to Scholastic.

Absences
  • If your child is absent from school please call
    the main office to request books to be sent home.
  • Books will be ready for pickup in the main office
    by 245.
  • If you know your child will be absent in advance
    (for vacations or prolonged sicknesses) please
    let me know via email and I will try to send work
    home.

Mrs. Kissel
  • Mrs. Kissel will meet with the 5th grade students
    once a week for 6 weeks at the beginning of the
    school year.
  • She will teach the students about study skills
    and good work habits.
  • Mrs. Kissel is also available during the school
    year via email at smmkissela_at_hotmail.com or by
    calling the mail office.

Birthdays
  • We encourage students to bring in birthday treats
    to celebrate their special day.
  • Treats will be handed out during the day when
    there is time.
  • Please send in treats with your child in the
    morning so they are here when we are ready to
    celebrate

Snack/Lunch
  • There will be time during our day for students to
    have a small snack.
  • Please send in healthy snacks such as pretzels,
    crackers, fruit, etc
  • Please send some sort of placemat for your child
    to use during lunch time.
  • We encourage the use of recyclable plastic
    containers in place of baggies
  • This year, there will be 1 teacher on the
    playground during lunch recess to help monitor
    the children.

Uniforms
  • It is extremely important that all 5th grade
    students follow the school uniform policy.
  • Points will be issued for students who are
    routinely out of uniform.
  • Girls please remember no nail polish or make-up,
    shirts must be tucked in at all times
  • Boys shirts must be tucked in at all times, hair
    MUST be cut according to school policy regardless
    of current style
  • It is EXTREMELY IMPORTANT for all of us to work
    together on this issue.

Responsibility
  • In order to foster the development of a sense of
    personal responsibility in our students, we need
    your help.
  • Please allow your child to accept the
    consequences of his/her actions and choices.
  • Should your child forget books, homework or
    lunch, please dont bring the forgotten items to
    school. Other students will be willing to share
    portions of their lunches with your child.
  • We all understand the desire to protect our
    children from unpleasant consequences but please
    help us to help your child assume responsibility
    for his/her actions.

Token System
  • Each child in the class will be assigned a number
    (usually their Friday folder number)
  • In a container in the classroom there are
    numbered tokens
  • When a child is caught being good by anyone in
    the school community, 1 token with that childs
    number on it will be placed in a special bag
  • The teacher will use this token bag to reward
    students with special jobs and privileges in the
    classroom and school
