Fusion, Assimilation and Modelling
Fusion What is it and what is it for?
  • Fusion is the process of combining information
from single or multiple sensor(s) with data
    sources (models, historical data etc..)
  • We use it for obtaining accurate information
about the state of the environment (Prediction
    uncertainty)
  • We also use it for obtaining new information
about the state of the environment (one cannot
    discover otherwise)
  • We want to achieve tactical decision-making
capability for the management of the environment

We want to achieve timely assessments of
potential threats and/or deteriorations on the
state of the environment

Information Fusion (illustration for
Decision-Making)
  • MetoCean Data Sources
  • Oil properties Data Sources
  • Hydrodynamic Data Sources
  • Models (OSIS, ERSEM, etc..)

5
Topics of Interest and Group Expertise
Models Assimilation with Observation and Model
Error Control
  • Techniques for combining model and observations
simultaneously to control the evolution of a
    model.
  • Enables the creation of optimal initial
    conditions
  • Improvement of model predictability
  • Several MetOcean Model forecast Applications (_at_
    NCOF, PML etc..)

Topics of Interest and Group Expertise
Water Quality Forecast and Management (WFD)
  • Data driven models for forecasting the risk of
    water contamination at recreational waters
  • ? Correlation of environmental data with
    microbial water contamination
  • Rainfall-runoffs/microbial activity causality,
simulated by data driven models only (ICREW beach
    models)
  • Water treatment processes (Infrastructure
    changes)
  • Process models assimilation with
    Earth-Observations (ERSEM model)

8
Topics of Interest and Group Expertise
Decision Support Systems Development and Fusion
Proteus Effluent Discharges Scenarios and Risk
Predictions
  • Data Fusion information needs to be interpreted
    (ex visualised, quantified..) according to
    operational users requirement specifications
  • ? Model Predictions uncertainties towards
    scenario options for decision-makers
