4SafeSearch filtering
- Many users prefer not to have adult sites
included in search results (especially if kids
use the same computer). Google's SafeSearch
screens for sites that contain explicit sexual
content and deletes them from your search
results. No filter is 100 percent accurate, but
SafeSearch should eliminate most inappropriate
material. - You can choose from among three SafeSearch
settings - Moderate filtering excludes most explicit images
from Google Image Search results but doesn't
filter ordinary web search results. This is your
default SafeSearch setting you'll receive
moderate filtering unless you change it. - Strict filtering applies SafeSearch filtering to
all your search results (i.e. both image search
and ordinary web search). - For more pointers on keeping your family safe on
the web, please read Google's Tips for Online
Safety.
5Google SafeSearch
- When you're searching on Google, you may prefer
to keep adult content out of your search results.
SafeSearch screens sites that contain sexually
explicit content and removes them from your
search results. While no filter is 100 accurate,
SafeSearch helps you avoid content you may prefer
not to see or would rather your children did not
stumble across. You can modify your computer's
SafeSearch settings by clicking on the
Preferences link to the right of the Google
search box. - Google SafeSearch Lock
- If you're worried about children removing the
SafeSearch setting without your knowledge you can
protect it with a password. - Locking SafeSearch is simple and quick and all
you need is a Google username and password. Once
locked, the Google search results page will be
visibly different to indicate that SafeSearch is
locked

11YouTube - Quick Tips
- Did you know . . . . Children under 13 years are
not permitted to access YouTube.Parents of
teens should consider whether their teen should
be supervised during his or her use of the
site.Videos containing minors should never be
sexually suggestive or violent. If you are a
minor and someone has directed sexual comments
towards you or sent you inappropriate videos,
immediately block them , tell your parents or
teacher and report the incident to YouTube.
12Cyber Bullying
- What can you do?
- Talk to your children and understand the ways in
which theyre using the internet and their mobile
phone. Make sure they know how to use this
technology safely and responsibly. Be aware that
by forwarding on emails, videos and images your
child is as likely to be an unwitting accessory
to cyberbullying as the actual target.
13Other ways you can help your child
- Assure them that they are not to blame and remind
them not to retaliate - Help them use the safety features on the internet
and on their phone to block upsetting messages.
Ensure that privacy settings are set to high to
stop unwanted contact - Tell them to keep evidence of offending emails,
text messages or online conversations - Contact the childs school if the cyberbullying
involves another pupil so that they can take
appropriate action. All schools have policies for
dealing with bullying - Contact the service provider and report the
cyberbullying - If the cyberbullying is serious then a criminal
offence may have may have occurred, then you
should consider contacting the police
14Other Tips
- Keep computers in a central place. This will make
it easier to keep an eye on your childrens
activities - Know where your children go online. If you have
young children, you may use the internet with
them. For older children you could agree which
sites they can and can't use before they go
online. You can also check where your kids have
been by looking at the history in your browser
menu. Another option is to use filtering tools
like Google SafeSearch. - Teach Internet Safety. It's impossible to monitor
your child's online activity all the time. As
they get older, they need to know how to use the
internet safely and responsibly when they're on
their own. - Use privacy settings and sharing controls. Many
sites that feature user-generated content,
including YouTube, Blogger and social networking
sites, have sharing controls that put users in
charge of who sees personal blogs, photos,
videos, and profiles. Using sharing controls is
particularly important when you or your children
share personal information like names, addresses,
or phone numbers, on public sites. Teach your
children to respect the privacy of friends and
family by not identifying people by name in
public profiles and pictures. - Protect passwords. Remind your children not to
give out their passwords. Make sure they make a
habit of unclicking "remember me" settings on
public computers such as those at school or in
the library. - Beware of strangers. Teach your children not to
arrange in-person meetings with people they meet
online, and not to share personal information
with online strangers because people may not be
who they claim to be.
15More Tips
- Prevent viruses. Use Antivirus Software and
update it regularly. Make sure your children
avoid downloading from file-sharing websites and
don't accept files from unknown people, or emails
with unknown attachments. - Teach your children to communicate responsibly.
Take the following as a good rule of thumb if
you wouldn't say it to someone's face, don't text
it, email it, instant message it, or post it as a
comment on someone's page. - View all content critically. Just because you see
it online, there's no guarantee it's true.
Children should learn how to distinguish reliable
sources from unreliable ones, and how to verify
information they find online. Make sure kids
understand that cutting and pasting content
directly from a website may be plagiarism.
16Mobiles
- Its a good idea to only give your number out to
friends who you know in the real world. If your
mobile number is given to people that you dont
know, they may hassle you. This is why its also
best not to put your number on your profile of
your social networking site (like Bebo, MySpace
and Facebook).Whilst having a camera phone is
cool and really useful, be careful if you share
your photos with others. - Pictures can be changed or shared around, so
think about what the image is and who you are
sending it to, before you press send. Once its
out there its out there forever!
17- Bluetoothing is a quick and easy way of sharing
stuff like photos, files and music. Its
important to be aware that unless you lock your
Bluetooth, anyone in the area can access things
in your phone, like your contacts. - If you dont want to share this information with
strangers (why would you?!), then make sure you
lock your Bluetooth. - Its also a good idea to change your password
from the default setting of 0000 so people cant
guess it. Locking your Bluetooth can help reduce
the risk of getting viruses or spam to your
mobile. - If you are receiving unwanted or insulting texts,
you can contact your service provider. - If you think that you are being targeted by other
people, and they are upsetting you, have a look
at the cyberbullying section of this site.
18Mobiles with Internet access
- Whilst we are worrying about how to keep children
safe on the internet, what about their mobile
phone? - Mobiles with Internet Access have unrestricted
access to the Internet - Which means access to ANYTHING
19Chat/IM
- Some people you meet online may not be who they
say they are, so its a good idea to make sure
the people on your contact list are people you
really know in the real world. - If someone adds you to their contact list and you
dont know them, make sure you block them. This
will stop them from seeing when you are logged
on, and they wont be able to contact you. - If you add someone and decide afterwards you
dont want them on your list you can delete them
too. - If you have your own profile on IM, its not a
good idea to include lots of information about
yourself, like your hobbies, favourite band, your
address and school. - Its also not a good idea to have a picture of
yourself on your profile- you can use one of the
pictures that are on IM already, or a picture of
a cartoon character. - If you have someone on your contact list who you
dont know in the real world, they will be able
to have access to your profile and see what you
look like. And you dont want that! - Lots of people also use webcams when they use IM-
this can be a great way of seeing your mates when
you are talking to them, but remember some people
you meet online may not be who they say they are.
- Webcam images can be recorded and copied, and
also shared with other people, so the best thing
to do is not use a webcam with people you dont
know in the real world. - Some people will try and speak to young people
using IM because they have bad intentions, and
they can fake webcam images and pretend to be
someone else to try and trick you. If you feel
worried about this, make sure you tell to a
trusted adult or report to thinkuknow. - Look out for this icon on other websites. This
means that you can report abuse directly to CEOP
from those sites. For example, MSN Live Messenger
has a tab with this icon on it.
