?2 Hall,
JACEE magnet at KEK
We would like to thank the IPNS cryogenic group
lead by Prof. T. Haruyama KEK for their support
for the JACEE magnet operation, Prof. A. Yamamoto
the director of the cryogenic center, Dr. Y.
Makida IPNS KEK for having made the JACEE magnet
available to us.
13
Magnet installation, TPC mounting
fixture
14
Broken wire
Chamber had to be fixed
electronics prepared
15
Chamber installed in the magnet and centered on
the beam line
16
A lot of work went into tuning the beam the
p.i.d.
17
Tests in ?2 BeamExperiment T558
  • 1-4 Gev/c e, µ, pi,K,p with C,Aerogel,TOF
  • 7 pad rows equipped 7 32 224 pads
  • Diffusion, resolution, ect measured as function
of drift distance, B field, pad-crossing angle.
  • dE/dx data taken with p.i.d.

19
Measurements in ?2 Beam
  • 1000 triggers/setting
  • Chamber moved precise distance and measured
    V_drift 4.5cm/µs ? 1-2 for TDR gas (93Ar
    5CH4 2CO2)
  • Spread beam to illuminate full chamber with mult
    scatt in few-mm-thick Pb plate
  • Data taken with B 01T f0,1020
  • 0.6,1.4,2.0,4.0GeV/c proton (polarity)
  • 1.0,2.0,4.0 GeV/c ? (-polarity)
  • As function of beam intensity
  • Analyses in progress, some preliminary results
    below

20
and a lot of meetings to understand the data
21
Very preliminary results on the x resolution by
Jun showed 3 dead preamps (out of 224)
22
Some plots by Katsumsa Ikematsu, here the
noise/channel
23
x resolution as function of B, drift
distance. Method fit track using outer rows,
look at point-track deviation for central
row6 N.B. this overestimates error (better
method in progress)
24
Same for z resolution
25
x resolution as function of pad-crossing angle,
drift distance

Next steps
  • Move to Cryo Hall
  • Continue testing with cosmics
  • Prepare conversion to Gems, Micromegas
  • Install Gems around October, Micromegas later
  • Test with cosmics up to April05
  • Continue beam tests

40
Conversion to Gems
  • Decided to use a 4-Gem stack triple Gem for gas
    amplification, one Gem for gating
  • KEK will make a new 'Zwischenflansch' for
mounting the padplane 4 Gem stack
  • New 'Zwischenflansch' will have extra HV
    feedthroughs as proposed by Philippe
Rosier/Tscharlie Ackermann), to be fabricated at
    Kek
  • Decided to remove the last FC ring (rather than
leave the last one in and mill off some material)
  • Need Guardring (Bernard Genolini)
  • KEK will manufacture the Gem frames and
    spacers,etc

41
Studies with IPN Orsay
  • (Joel, Philippe, Bernard, Vincent and others)
  • Looking at end-plate mechanics -gt material
    dominated by electronics -gt
  • require lt 30 rad. length
  • Designed quad-Gem plane for MPI/Desy/Kek
    prototype tests at KEK
