10
Why does hunger exist?
  • Is it because
  • There are too many people to feed?
  • There isnt enough food?
  • Hungry people are too ignorant to change?

11
Why does hunger exist?
  • Differs from country to country but here are some
    main reasons
  • Poverty
  • Poor dont have enough to buy food or seeds,
    fertilizer and tools to grow
  • Overpopulation
  • More people than land can support, and population
growth is so rapid it deteriorates quality of
    life
  • Government Policies
  • Policy affects food production, market prices and
    sale practices
  • More to food for people or to military???
  • Education
  • Most people dont know how to improve their lives

12
Health Consequences of Hunger
  • Children and pregnant women always suffer first
  • 1/3 ½ of all children in developing nations die
    before the age of 5
  • Malnourished pregnant women generally give birth
    to low birth weight babies

13
Food Security
  • Poverty, social inequality and lack of education
are primary causes and major obstacles to ending
hunger and malnutrition in the world
  • Food security is having access at all times to
the food we need to lead an active and healthy
    life

14
Food Security
  • Food must be available, accessible and used
  • Available
  • Adequate amounts of good quality, safe food must
be produced or imported at the national and local
    levels
  • Accessible
  • Food must be distributed and available locally
and it must be affordable to all people
  • Used
  • Food needs to be used in the best way possible
for each person to be healthy (sufficient in
quantity, quality and variety for each
    individuals needs)

15
Food Security
  • To achieve national food security, a country must
be able to import the food it needs and be able
to store it, distribute it and ensure equal
    access to it
  • Families must have the means to produce or
purchase and have time and knowledge to meet the
    nutritional needs of family members

16
Food Case Studies
  • The case studies provided contrast past and
present conditions in selected countries. You are
given 2 countries from a region.
  • Consider the factors causing the current
situation related to hunger in each country
  • What are the conditions related to hunger in
terms of availability, accessibility and use of
    food

17
National Programs That Help

    grocery stores
