Human papillomavirus
  • Abbreviated as HPV
  • There are over 100 different strains of HPV, with
    30 being sexually transmitted
  • High risk forms of HPV result in abnormal pap
smears for women, which result in cancers of the
vulva, cervix, anus, and the penis (in men).
  • Most people do not have symptoms of HPV. The most
    common symptom is genital warts.
  • Genital warts are usually raised lumps found
around the genital and anal region. Warts must
    usually be surgically removed.
  • There is no known cure for HPV.
  • In June 2006, a vaccine was approved by the FDA
for women that protects against 4 types of HPV
which cause 70 of cervical cancers and 90 of
    genital warts.
