3The Plot
- Of Mice of Men is a novel about two young friends
looking for a place in the world. The two friends
are the complete opposite of the other. Lennie,
is incredibly strong and moronic whereas George
is small and clever. Although these to men are
completely different, they stay together, moving
from farm to ranch and from ranch to farm. They
do this in order to gain enough money so that,
maybe one day, they can afford a place of their
own and live a free life. However, finding the
road to freedom is harder then it seems -
Lennies naïve innocence continues to find
trouble and Georges sagacity may not be able to
get them out of trouble, and their undying dream
of freedom may be lost after all.

4The Setting
- Of Mice and Men takes place in Salinas,
California (also where Steinbeck was born). It
takes place in the twentieth-century, during the
Great Depression. The Salinas River has great
significance in the novel, as Lennie runs away to
the River to find George and renew his spirits.

5Main Character George Milton
- George is a character in the story that has
street smarts and continuously saves himself
and his friend, Lennie, from the dangers that
surrounds them. He leads Lennie in the world
which he thinks if full of betrayel and despair.
Steinbeck writes, If he tangles with you,
Lennie, were gonna get the can. . . Look,
Lennie. You try to keep away from him, will you?
Dont never speak to him. If he comes in here,
you will move clear to the other side of the
room (p.29). This quotation reveals how George
looks after Lennie, and will do everything in his
power to protect Lennie from the dangers of the
world.

6Main Character Lennie Small
- Lennie is an unbright character who is a gentle
man, regardless of his size. He also looks up to
his friend, George Milton, due to Georges
cleverness and empathy for Lennie. George is
telling Lennie about the storys of ranchers and
how they have no homes, when Lennie interrupts,
But not us! An why? Because . . . Because I got
you to look after me, and you got me to look
after you, and thats why (p.15). This quotation
demonstrates how Lennie looks up to George and
admires George and their friendship greatly.

7The Theme
- A major theme in the novel, Of Mice and Men, is
hope. Throughout the novel, George and Lennie
kept their hopes alive throughout all the
troubles they endure. Thus, this book teaches us
to hope and to hold onto that one ray of sunshine
that can lead us through the darkest moments.
