    each week
  • use the gradebook for assessing student writing
    and other activities
  • Make their courses consistent with the Writing
    Program Mission

12
The Writing Program Mission
  •  Our Mission
  • To help students engage as active participants in
    learning their subject matter
  • To provide students with ways of thinking and
writing to help them understand and learn their
    disciplines
  • To help students learn the conventions of
discourse that will define them as professionals
    in their chosen fields.
  • Originally articulated by Jim Booth

13
Writing Program Mission, cont.
  • The Writing Program courses are based upon two
    powerful ideas about writing instruction
  • Writing is a process. In both academic and
    professional writing classrooms
  • Students gain increased control over their own
    writing processes, resources, and strategies.
  • Students come to understand the value of drafting
and revision based upon thoughtful feedback by
different types of readers, especially writing
    faculty.
  • Students develop a repertoire of strategies to
    employ in different writing situations.
  • Writing takes place within contexts. Writing
faculty members help students understand the
concept of discourse communities so that they
may write with suitable attention to audience and
    writing situation.
