Learning Cycles Providers of essential math
skill review programs for Grades 1-10
  • MATHS MATE weekly worksheets (5th-10th)
  • FIRST 5s daily warm-ups (6th-Algebra)
  • HEADS UP daily math workouts (1st 4th)
  • NEW 2013 Editions 100 Aligned with Common Core

2
OUR PROGRAMS
  • are NOT computer-based
  • are NOT overwhelming to teachers
  • are NOT the daily lessons
  • are NOT drill and kill

5
Ready, Set, Review
  • So, what should we see in an effective
    mathematics classroom?
  • A deliberate and carefully planned reliance on
ongoing, cumulative review of key skills and
    concepts
  • Using cumulative review to keep skills and
    understandings fresh, reinforce previously taught
material, and give students a change to clarify
    their understandings.

6
MEMORY RETENTION
Long term memory
Regular review develops and maintains long-term
memory.
MEMORY RETENTION
Without regular review or practice, long-term
memory is not developed.
TIME
7
OUR PROGRAMS provide regular review to maintain
memory of basic mathematical skills and concepts
for Grades 1-10. They are
  • comprehensive
  • systematic
  • user-friendly
  • affordable

Components of MATHS MATE PROGRAM Grades 5-10
9
  • comprehensive

Each week students do problems that cover a range
of skills and concepts.
10
systematic
  • One sheet goes home each week with other assigned
    homework.
  • Students bring their completed worksheets to
    class.
  • The teacher calls the answers from the Teacher
Manual and students mark their own work.
  • Students fill in the number of correct problems
on the bottom of the sheet.

Tracking is a powerful tool.
  • Students transfer weekly results from the
worksheet to the quarterly Tracking Sheet.
  • Identified gaps are addressed with the
    appropriate online Skill Builders.

Area of concern 14 Squares / Square
Roots On-line Skill Builder 14.1
12
Problem numbers cover the same concept or skill
each week.
13
Online SKILL BUILDERS
  • For extra practice, download and complete the
SKILL BUILDER page that corresponds with the
    area of difficulty.

14
TESTING
  • There are two tests available every 4 weeks 16
    tests per year.
  • These can be used as
  • Pre-test and post-test
  • Practice test real test
  • Different tests for students sitting
    side-by-side.

15
TEST RESULTS
  • The teacher marks a test for each student and
fills in a Test Results sheet.
  • Areas of weakness are identified.

16
DAILY WARM-UPS A 32-week program
  • FIRST 5s provides comprehensive, organized review
of all grade-level Common Core Standards

17
  • Click and the answers appear

Designed by teachers for teachers, our programs
  • 100 aligned with Common Core teaching
  • do NOT interfere with planned lessons.
  • come ready to use and requires minimal class or
    teacher prep time.
  • provide the opportunity for students to
    self-correct and track their results.
  • have a diagnostic component.

31
Response to Intervention
  • Our programs are used both at Tier 1 to
    supplement the core instructional mathematics
curriculum and Tier 2 with follow-up Skill
    Builders.
  • Using the programs ensure that more students are
able to meet grade level norms without additional
    assistance because of the comprehensive,
systematic review of essential basic skills and
    concepts.
  • The weekly tracking provides frequent progress
monitoring, thus identifying which students need
additional instruction and review. This review
is done with the Skill Builders.
