FLORA ALONG THE ARAHTOS
  • The flora of the river consists of more than 1800
    kinds of plants. A lot of them are rare and they
    dont even exist anywhere else apart from this
    area.

  • A lot of wild flowers grow in this area such as
    lilium, albanicum, dactulorisa, saccifera,
    primula veris, crocus veluchensis, centaurea
    vlachorum which was named after the name of
    Vlahon people - who lived near the Pindos viola
    dukadjinika etc

  • If someone follows the paths of the Pindos can

    only in this area, a great deal of broad leafed
    trees, a rich flora, mammals such as the brown

  • The lie of the mountains and the exceptional
    fauna creat the circumstances for a rich flora
    (partridge wild pigs, rabbits, deer, wolves,
    foxes, squirrels)

  • The Lesser Spotted Eagle (Aquila pomarina) One
    or two pairs of Lesser Spotted Eagles come and
    nest every summer in the wooded hills around the
    wetlands of Arahtos.

  • The Bittern (Botaurus stellaris) The Bittern is
    a rare species of heron. It was in the large reed
    beds of Arahtos that it was first recorded as
    nesting in Greece

  • The Spotted Eagle (Aquila clanga) Thiw is one
    of the rarest eagles in Europe and Greece.
    Appriximately 8 10 Spotted eagles spend the
    winter in Arahtos, perched on isolated trees or
    searching for sick or injured water birds
