2
Dyslexia and Its History
  • Dyslexia is a learning disability that takes
place when organizational differences occur in
the brain. Dyslexia is present at birth and
makes it difficult to read, speak, or write.
Also it results in difficulty trying to learn,
    remember, or express information.
  • Dr. Samuel Whorton is credited as an early
pioneer in Dyslexia. He called dyslexia
    Stresphosymbolia, which means twisted symbols.
Also in Europe, doctors were studying Word
Blindness. All of this occurred in the 1900s.

3
Symptoms Of Dyslexia
  • Have a hard time noticing sounds in words, sound
    order, rhymes, or syllable sequences.
  • Difficulty with word Identification.
  • Difficulty Spelling.
  • Difficulty with number and letter sequences,
either read or written (Ex. 12-21)
  • Bad reading comprehension
  • Difficulty expressing thoughts in written form.
  • Delayed Speech
  • Incomplete interpretation of speech heard.
  • Difficulty expressing thoughts out loud.
  • Difficulty with directions (right and left, up
and down, early and late, yesterday and tomorrow,
    months and days.)
  • Confusion about right and left handedness.
  • Similar difficulties among relatives.
  • Difficulty with handwriting.
  • Difficulty in mathematics-sequencing of numbers
and directional steps, or the language of math.
  • Difficulty staying organized.

4
Home Dyslexia Test
  • Do you have any family members who experienced
difficulty learning to read or spell when they
    were at school?
  • Has your child suffered from repeated ear
    infections?
  • Is your child experiencing feelings of failure at
    school?
  • Does your child have difficulty with spelling?
  • Does your child confuse left and right?
  • Is anyone in your family left handed?
  • Does your child have trouble reading allowed?
  • Does your child get confused while following
directions, for example when playing a game?
  • Does your child have difficulty remembering the
    multiplication tables?

Dyslexias Affect
  • Dyslexias Affect on The Body
  • Dyslexia is neurologically based and runs in
families. Although it does not affect the body
like cancer or muscular dystrophy do, it affects
    every day life
  • Dyslexias Affect on Everyday Life
  • Dyslexia makes it difficult to read, write and
perform math. Dyslexics must learn methods of
coping with dyslexia. Also the must choose
professions in which dyslexia does not interfere
like art, sports, architecture, engineering, etc.

6
Treatments for Dyslexia
  • Dyslexia is present at birth but is usually not
evident until the child begins learning to read.
People usually get dyslexia through heredity.
There is no cure for dyslexia but it can be
treated. Dyslexics can get special education.
Special educations teach dyslexics techniques of
learning with dyslexia and coping with it. A
special education for dyslexia can cost up to
23,000 a year for a private school. Many
    dyslexics are home schooled.

7
Interview With Cindy Beil
  • Is there research being done to find a cure or a
better treatment for dyslexia? Constantly, Not
for a cure but there is always research being
conducted to find the best methods of treatment.
  • How much would a special education cost? The
cost depends on the school specifically. Some
dyslexics are home schooled so there is no cost.
  • When was dyslexia discovered, and by whom? Dr.
Samuel Whorton is credited as an early pioneer in
dyslexia. He called is Strephosymbolia which
means twisted symbols. Also in Europe, doctors
were studying Word Blindness. This was all
    happening in the 1900s.
  • What are some tests a health care provider would
run to help diagnose dyslexia? Normally a
psychologist tests for dyslexia. There is no set
test psychologists use to diagnose dyslexics.
They use whatever test they like best.

  • Look at the slide on the overhead. It shows
what text can look like to people with dyslexia.
This is what the text really says.
  • On a fine, sunny day in the small town of
Woodage, you see the people gather in the town
square. There is not a notice to meet, nor an
event to gather for. Rather the people come out
to visit with each other on fine, sunny days in
    the small town of Woodage.
  • Whereas every other day, the people are
    accountants, bakers, engineers, clerks and
regular working folk. On fine, sunny days in the
small town of Woodage, the people are different
when they gather in the town square. They are
    fiddlers, acrobats, clowns, jesters, peddlers,
zoo keepers, dancers and cavorters. They play,
they laugh, they sing on fine, sunny days in the
small town of Woodage. And when the sun goes
down, the people go home to prepare for the next
day when they are once again regular working
    folk.
  • And that is what happens on fine, sunny days in
    the small town of Woodage.

  • Look at the next slide on overhead. These are
pictures of the brain sliced in half. The face
is at the top of the page. These pictures were
taken as people were following a pattern of dots
on a screen. The red areas show what areas of
the brain were active while they followed the
pattern. The bottom brains, are brains of
dyslexics. The areas of their brains failed to
operate as much as those who were not dyslexic.
This may be part of the reason is it so hard for
dyslexics to follow directions, learn to read and
    write, and express thought.

10
  • Look at the last slide. This slide shows that
about one out of every ten people is dyslexic.
    (This is an estimation)
