Founding the Sectional Anatomy Course for
Conforming to the Development of Modern Medical
Imageology

Sectional Anatomy has been a new course of
medical students following the clinical
application of Computed Tomography,
Ultrasonography, Magnetic Resonance Imaging ,
and etc. In order to explore the teaching law of
Sectional Anatomy, we will introduce and
summarize the sectional anatomy teaching in our
university.

1. An integrated theory system is the
prerequisite for design of the course

• We published 6 papers to discuss the definition,
  character, research limits, mission, history,
  research methods, present, and future of
  Sectional Anatomy. The integrated theory system
  of sectional anatomy was established.

2.Combining research, teaching, and clinical
application into an organ whole is the best way
to develop sectional anatomy teaching

• Research is the basis of the course construction.
• Basic medicine must combine with clinical one.

3. Establishing the three stages teaching system
of sectional anatomy

• First stage is for undergraduate students, 30
  hours
• Second stage is for postgraduate students, 80
  hours
• Three stage is lifelong education.

• In From 1993 to present, run study class of
  sectional and imaging anatomy once a year,
  which is National Project of Continuing Medical
  Education. 1998, this project won the Advanced
  Prize of Science and Technology of the Ministry
  of Education of P.R.China.

4.Compiling teaching material is the core of the
course construction

• Write 2 textbooks for undergraduate and
  postgraduate students respectively
• Prepare more than 3000 pieces of slides
  photographed from the sectional specimen and
  imaging
• Make multimedia CAI and videotape on sectional
  anatomy

5. Training the students thinking of sectional
anatomy by combining the three-dimensional
structures with serial sections

• The best learning method for sectional anatomy is
  contrast the sectional specimen with CT, MRI
  images. So, during teaching, first step is
  reviewing regional anatomy then, teaching the
  serial sectional specimen finally, introducing
  CT and MRI images. For example the sectional
  anatomy of the pancreas.

6. The lab teaching is the key to sectional
anatomy

• Demonstration of the serial sections of the human
  body
• Observe the sectional specimen contrast with CT
  and MRI images
• Cut the organs( for example brain, lung liver,
  kidney, etc) into the sections
• Sum up the lesson by themselves

Through 10 years working, the sectional anatomy
has become an excellent course. In 1997, this
project won the National Prize of Achievements
in Teaching Research of P.R.China.
