Minerna - nm, m(2) Magnetic Moment Limit
Physics
For massless neutrinos mn disappears, simple
extension of Standard Model
? SM prediction Very small!
An unexpected large magnetic moment - New Physics
and model dependent extraction of absolute
neutrino mass. Present limits lt 6.8 ?10-10 mB
LSND 2001 (Miniboone claims a projected
factor of 2 improvement) from nm- e scattering.

Experimental Signature EM coupling to atomic
electrons -
Kinematic Constraint Very forward scattered
electron !
Standard weak process has very different
dependence
Game is to get as small as possible.

Back of envelope calculation for a fine grained
detector - Minerna ?Assuming 3 ton target
region, 5?1020 POT (? 2?1017 ns/m2), and
100 MeV
Limit 3-5 ? 10-10 mB
Maybe worth pursuing for more realistic study. ?
Specifically Backgrounds!
In that light, a mn interaction generator has
been written (Barun Dhar, Pittsburgh) and
integrated into the Minerna MC by Steve Boyd.
A good exercise for a graduate student

Conclusions
- ? Further investigation worth pursuing.
- Tools for detailed study are now in place
- ?Backgrounds - Single po production,
- Standard Weak
Scattering - ?Threshold - How low can we set
? - ? How large can we make active area?
-
- ? Hope to have better results in few months
