• The Teddy Bear is named after Teddy Roosevelt.
• Maxwell House coffee once asked the President
  what he thought of their product.  He responded

• After he left office in 1909, Roosevelt went on
  an African safari that netted many of the
  specimens that now stock the Smithsonian
  Institute.
• Most of the original National Parks and the
  National Park system were created by Roosevelt.

• Roosevelt authored over 25 books.
• Roosevelt garnered a larger portion of the
  popular vote as a third-party candidate (the Bull
  Moose Party) than anyone in U.S. history.

• - U.S. needed progressive reforms to
  compete with other nations.

• United Mine Workers (UMW) coal miners from
  Pennsylvania.
• Workers went on strike for better conditions.
  (owners wouldnt give in)
• Roosevelt offered an arbitration, settlement
  imposed by an outside party.
• Owners refused but when Roosevelt threaten the
  army would run all mines.the owners gave in.

• Bureau of Corporations - Authority to investigate
  corporations and issue reports on their
  activities.

1906 Hepburn Act

• Strengthen the Interstate Commerce Commission
  (ICC) by giving it the power to set RR rates.

1906 Meat Inspection Act

• Federal inspection of meat sold and set standards
  of cleanliness in meatpacking plants. (thanks to

• Prohibited the manufacture, sale, or shipment of
  impure or falsely labeled food or drugs.
