Title: Supply Chain Workshop
1 SUPPLY CHAIN LOGISTICS EDUCATION AND RESEARCH
INITIATIVES Prof. Sanchoy Das Email

2ABOUT THE UNIVERSITY
- NJIT is New Jerseys leading public technological
research university and enrolled more than 8,800
students in 2003-2004. - The university awards approximately 1,800 degrees
annually from the B.S. through the Ph.D. in an
array of engineering and technology disciplines. - Annual research expenditures are now over 60
million.
3SUPPLY CHAIN LOGISTICS INITIATIVES _at_ NJIT
- The Supply Chain and Logistics initiatives at
NJIT have a strong interdisciplinary theme.
Faculty from a variety of engineering programs
(Industrial, Civil, Electrical) work in
collaboration with faculty in Management and
Computer Science to make these initiatives a
success. - EDUCATION
- - M.S. in Transportation
- - M.S. in Engineering Management (Supply Chain
Systems Concentration) - RESEARCH
- - National Center for Transportation Industrial
Productivity - Supply Chain Research Group
- These initiatives are based on two important
features of supply chain logistics that we
believe are key to success in this field - systems complexity and performance metrics
4SUPPLY CHAIN LOGISTICS THE COMPLEXITY
- Production
- Produces chips in six different locations four
in the US, one in Britain and one in Israel - Chips are shipped to 7 assembly locations in SE
Asia. - Distribution
- The final product is shipped to hundreds of
facilities worldwide - 12 different airlines are involved
- 95 of products delivered within 45 days
- 5 are delivered within 90 days.
- THREE FLOWS
- Material Flows
- Information Flows
- Financial Flows
5SUPPLY CHAIN LOGISTICS PERFORMANCE METRICS
- A. INVENTORY
- Inventory Turnover Ratio
- Weeks of Supply
- Variance from Target Inventory Level
- Inventory Positioning
- B. SERVICE
- Responsiveness - Speed with which which change
- (variety quantity) is met
- Stockouts Order fulfillment or service rate
- Replenishment Cycle Lead time between delivery
orders - Minimum Order Quantity replenishment batch sizes
- C. COSTS
- Unit warehouse costs
- Unit distribution transportation costs
- Efficiency Cost of the supply chain
6EDUCATION PROGRAMS _at_ NJIT
The two supply chain logistics related graduate
programs are designed to meet the needs of
students from a variety of undergraduate
disciplines. DEGREE REQUIREMENTS Completion of
30 Graduate credits including a set of mandatory
core courses. TAKING CLASSES All courses are
offered primarily in evening and weekend sessions
at our Newark campus, and ideal for company
employees. Each course typically meets one a
week. Many of the courses are also offered
online in an E-Learning mode. We provide you with
the flexibility to mix and match online and
in-class courses, to fit your schedule. STUDENT
STATUS Both Full-Time and Part-Time students are
enrolled. Tuition is eligible for reimbursement
through many Corporate Employee Benefit Programs.
7EDUCATION PROGRAMS
M.S in Transportation - prepares students to be
transportation planners, engineers, and managers
who can plan, design, operate, and manage
transportation systems in a variety of
applications. Primary focus is on public
transportation systems and inter-modal systems.
Three general areas of specialization are
available Transportation Engineering -
physical design and operational aspects of
transportation systems. Transportation
Planning - analysis and integration of
transportation systems. Advanced Transportation
Systems and Technologies - emerging technologies
such as intelligent transportation systems.
8EDUCATION PROGRAMS
- M.S. in Engineering Management (Supply Chain
Systems Concentration) prepares the student for
a career on both the managerial and technical
aspects of supply chains. Focus is on all
functions associated with the movement of goods,
services and information along the chain.
Instruction is provided on key supply chain
performance metrics such as inventory,
transportation logistics, facilities design, and
information technology. Key features of the
program are - The program focuses in detail at the analytical
and technical skills required to build an
efficient and cost effective supply chain. - The program provides a solid foundation in
systems modeling, logistics, inventory theory,
and advanced training in the use of information
systems and quantitative tools. - The program is designed to capitalize on existing
expertise within the University and its research
facilities, and offers a thesis or project
option.

10RESEARCH ACTIVITIES
The National Center for Transportation and
Industrial Productivity (NCTIP) - one of four
national university centers designated under the
landmark Intermodal Surface Transportation
Efficiency Act. Research activities are focused
in the areas of activities in the areas of
passenger and freight movement efficiency, and
regulatory and institutional efficiency.
Supply Chain Research Group (SCRG) a
collaborative research group comprising of
faculty conducting research in the application of
advanced system modeling tools on supply chain
systems. Research activities are focused on
inventory analysis, supply chain responsiveness,
supply chain contracts, distribution and routing
analysis, and flexibility.
