Accommodations Facilities
  • Your most immediate tasks upon arriving in
Malaysia will be to find a place to live and
where you can get all of your basic needs.
Canadian teachers live singly or in shared
apartments within 15 minutes walking distance of
the school. The apartments in the area are mostly
2 and 3 bedroom units. The units are very
comfortable, generally come fully furnished (as
negotiated by you), and can be had for RM1800 to
RM2300, depending on the level of luxury and
amenities you desire. Teachers, local real estate
agents, and other Taylors staff can help you
find the right accommodation for you. You can
also find an apartment on your own check the
classified section of the Malaysian newspaper
(www.thestar.com.my ) for apartments in Subang
Jaya (Lafite Apartments is located in SS17 and
Spring and Summer Villas are located in SS15).
There is a modern mall and European grocery store
(Carrefour) within walking distance of the school
and apartments. There are also fresh produce
shops as well as morning markets all very close
    to the school.
  • As per your package information, remember that
you will need to put down 3.5 months rent up
front when you sign your tenants agreement, and
put down deposits for your utilities. These fees
are typical for expatriates moving to any new
    country.

Teaching
  • Teaching in Malaysia will be as rewarding an
experience as you make it. You are given the
freedom to run your class as you wish and to
introduce new teaching techniques just as you
would in Canada. Teacher typically have one
preparation per semester and are teaching the
most appreciative and respectful students you
will ever encounter. The professional standards
of the Ontario College of Teachers are applicable
in teaching practices at the ICPU Programme.

21
  • One of the truly rewarding experiences offered at
Taylors University College is the opportunity to
work with a teaching staff comprised of both
Canadian and Malaysian teachers. You will gain
insights as to how and why you practice your idea
of pedagogy and surely help others to reflect on
    their own skill sets.

The Students
  • The students at Taylors College are an ambitious
group. They aim to please and are diligent
workers. Your students will be eager to hear
about your background and to know about where you
come from. They are also eager to share with you
their culture. Most new Canadian teachers have
been struck by the politeness of their students
expect to hear your students say thank you
everyday on their way out of class! Students will
also be very keen to take advantage of any extra
help offered by their teachers. Most courses
offer one day of extra help after school per week
for any students interested in attending.
  • Some students you teach may speak English as
their third or fourth language. Understandably,
they may have some difficulty in keeping up with
the rest of the class. These students have the
opportunity, and should be encouraged, to improve
their written and spoken English through the
    Taylors Language Centre.

Leisure
  • One of the great rewards of working in Malaysia
is the opportunity for travel. Malaysia has some
of the finest beaches in the world (Perhentian
Islands right, Lang Tengah, Tioman, Redang,
etc.). The waters are crystal clear and most
teachers have tried, if not become hooked, on
diving. There are world class dive sites off of
Malaysia Borneo and the surrounding countries of
    Thailand, Indonesia, Singapore, Cambodia,
Vietnam, Laos, and India all provide plenty of
    opportunities for adventure!
  • Check www.airasia.com, www.latestays.com, and
www.tourism.gov.my to find more information on
    travel in and around Malaysia.

Canada in Malaysia
  • As you are considering coming to Malaysia, make
sure that you gather as much information as you
can. Make yourself familiar with the taxation
laws and implications of living away from home
for an extended period of time. You should also
be aware of the services offered by the Canadian
Government while you are living in Malaysia.
