Basic Facts

• Andersonville was a Southern prison during the
  Civil War
• Andersonville was officially named Camp Sumter
• The most notorious Civil War prison
• Located in southern Georgia
• Built to hold 10,000 Andersonville, at one time,
  held over 33,000 230 more than it was built to
  hold

Conditions

• Stagnant, dirty stream in the middle of the camp
  used as a sewer, and for drinking and bathing
  water
• No permanent housing was provided, nor were
  prisoners allowed to build their own shelter
• Daily Food Allowance included 1 ¼ lb. stale
  grain, 1/3 lb. 1 lb. of beef or bacon, and
  occasionally a few tablespoons of beans or rice
• No medical treatment available
