1BRFSS 2002
Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System
2BRFSS
- The largest continuously conducted telephone
health survey in the world - CDC developed standard core questionnaire for
states to use to provide data that could be
compared across states. - Enables the CDC, state health departments, and
other health and education agencies to monitor
risk behaviors related to chronic diseases,
injuries and death - About half of all deaths in the United States are
caused by health risk behaviors (McGinnis and
Foege, 1993).

3BRFSS
- People aged 18 and older are randomly called and
asked to take part in the survey. They remain
completely anonymous. - Nationwide, survey items remain relatively
constant from year to year. In contrast, state
specific questions can be changed quickly to
track immediate health concerns. - BRFSS relies on a sample of the population. The
sampling method used assures comparability of
data across states and over time.
http//www.cdc.gov/brfss
4CT has used the BRFSS to
- Track the progress of Healthy People 2000 and
Healthy Connecticut 2000 Objectives - Help identify 25 priorities for improving the
quality and length of life for Connecticut
residents - Provide baseline data for the new Abstinence Only
education program on adult attitudes toward
sexual abstinence as an option for unmarried
persons - Describe the prevalence of cancer risk factors
among the Connecticut population, including
identifying population groups and age groups at
increased risk based on their behaviors
http//www.cdc.gov/brfss
5CT has used the BRFSS to
- Obtain funding for an anti-smoking intervention
that targeted African-American and Hispanic
adults - Monitor the effect of recent bicycle helmet
legislation in Connecticut - Provide information on tobacco consumption and
estimates of the burden of smoking to support the
states lawsuit against tobacco companies to
recover Medicaid costs due to smoking - Assist the Department of Social Services in
monitoring the risk behaviors of recipients of
social service programs, including Medicaid,
AFDC, subsidized housing, welfare, food stamps,
and SSI

Turning Information Into Health
The following data from the The Selected
Metropolitan/Micropolitan Area Risk Trends
(SMART) project uses the BRFSS to analyze the
data of selected metropolitan and micropolitan
statistical areas (MMSAs) with 500 or more
respondents. Only 7 of Connecticuts Counties had
a large enough sample size to be included.
