FY2009 Accomplishments

• Task
• Scan original paper Data Documentation Forms
  (DDFs) containing substantial metadata for
  historic NODC archival collections
• Challenges
• multiple pages per DDF (10 to gt50 pages/DDF),
• usually hand written,
• frequently written in pencil,
• frequent duplication of information within a DDF
• Progress
• Off to a slow start, but gaining steam
• - Inventory of existing DDFs undertaken
• Successful pilot project to scan one DDF
  containing 41 pages
• 162 DDFs containing 4418 pages currently at
  contractor for scanning

• Finish inventory of number of pages remaining
• Scan remaining estimated 30,000 40,000 pages
• Analog data records
• Create inventory of analog data records (e.g.,
  log sheets, computer printouts with no
  corresponding digital representation)
• Scan analog data records
• Key-entry of data and metadata
• Double-key entry of analog data into digital
  form (e.g., key enter data into spreadsheet or
  database)
• - Double-key entry of DDF metadata into digital
  form (e.g., key enter into FGDC-oriented template
  or database)
