Title: Communication 110

1
Communication 110
  • Module 1 Communicating as a Process

2
Consider Communication as a Process
  • Communication requires a sender.
  • Communication requires a receiver.
  • Communication requires a message.
  • Communication requires a channel.
  • Communication requires an environment.
  • Communication encounters noise.
  • Communication requires feedback.

3
What does that mean?
  • We start with an idea, a message that needs to be
    communicated.
  • We need someone to create or encode and send that
    message.
  • We also need someone to receive and interpret
    that message.

4
But theres more to it than that.
  • Senders and receivers need the same code or
    language to understand the message.
  • Also, some messages require special channels for
    urgency or confidentiality.

5
But thats it right? Wrong.
  • We all experience noise when sending or receiving
    a message.
  • Consider a bad phone connection, a hot classroom,
an email server that crashes, or a bad morning
    plaguing your day.
  • As senders we must anticipate noise and as
receivers, we must attempt to decrease noise.

6
What is noise?
  • Noise is a distraction.
  • It can be sender or receiver based.
  • It can be internal or external.
  • It can be a slight irritant, or it can destroy a
    message.

7
Choose an appropriate channel.
  • The channel is the manner in which the message is
    sent.
  • It could be a phone call, a meeting, or an email.
  • What do each of these examples mean for a message
    you receive?

8
We can create an environment for communication.
  • Environment means more than just geography.
  • It means tone and relationship.
  • It means surroundings.
  • Imagine being put on hold when dealing with a
stressful situation. What do you hear on the
    other end of the phone?

9
Communication creates feedback
  • Feedback is the message sent from the receiver
back to the sender regarding the initial message.
  • As the receiver do you agree, disagree, or
    require clarification?

10
As the sender, invite feedback
  • Ask for questions.
  • Listen attentively.
  • Scan the receiver for facial expression.
  • Scan the receiver for nonverbal information, or
    body language.

11
Communication is a process, recommunicate.
  • Consider the organization of the message.
  • Consider the audience.
  • Anticipate and avoid noise.
  • Set an appropriate environment.
  • Choose an appropriate channel.
  • Be prepared for feedback and to continue the
    process.

12
What does the model look like?
13
Assignment for Communication Model
  • Create a collage of your perceptions of the
    Communication Model theory.
  • What images, colors, perspectives could you
    choose?
  • What takes priority?
  • What gets pushed to the side or background?
  • Be prepared to discuss your collage.
