The Game
  • There are eleven players from each team on the
    field at one time
  • One side has the ball (offense)
  • The other side tries to stop the
  • offense from progressing (defense)

  • A football field is 100 yards long
  • It is also 53 yards wide
  • The parameters of the field are defined with
    lines painted white
  • These are known as out of bounds lines

  • Inside the lines is known as the playing field
  • Outside the lines are known as the out-of-bounds
  • As soon as the football or a player who has the
    football touches or goes over the out-of-bounds
    line, the play is over

  • The length of the game varies from level to level
  • The NFL and college have four quarters, each 12
    minutes long
  • High School football has four eight minute
    quarters

  • Before a play can happen both the offense and
    defense get in a huddle
  • In the huddle one person speaks and tells the
    rest of the team the play of defense they are
    going to run

  • Then they break the huddle and line up at the
    line of scrimmage
  • The imaginary line at the football which
    separates offense and defense

  • The play begins with the center hiking the ball
    to the quarterback
  • The quarterback then gets the ball to one of the
    other players on the team
  • Either by handing it off or passing it to another
    teammate

  • The ball can be thrown backwards as many times as
    they want
  • Known as a backwards lateral
  • A quarterback can only pass the ball if he is
    behind the line of scrimmage

    passing play
  • They choose the play based on defensive
    tendencys and formations

  • Man to man, where the defensive backs guard one
    single player
  • Zone, is where they cover only one area on the
    field
