• Rhode Island is economically distressed with an
  unemployment rate above 8.5
• Highest in the nation
• Health care is the states largest industry by
  employment level
• Four the states top ten employers are hospitals
• Highest projected growth to 2016 at almost 20
• Health care agencies need registered nurses and
  nurse managers
• All state schools are forced to turn away large
  numbers of qualified students every year Rhode
  Islanders who could be gainfully employed in a
  vital industry with secure employment

Technical Assistance

• Formalize collaboration between state schools of
  nursing programs (URI, RIC, CCRI) yielding a
  better use of scarce resources
• Develop new teaching/learning models that expand
  capacity, including simulation
• Assist in the development of competency-based
  curricula to create the nurse of the future

• Develop leadership education and training to
  address the critical shortage of nurse managers
• Provide faculty development to support better
  increasingly culturally and linguistically
  diverse students, as well as those with
  documented disabilities and
• Prepare industry-based nurses to assist in the
  teaching mission

Conduct Applied Research

• Conduct a targeted assessment and evaluation of
  the status of nursing educational capacity within
  the state commissioned by current Senate
  Commission on Nursing
• Currently in progress
• Provide support for evaluation of pilot
  initiatives in teaching/learning, e.g., greater
  use of simulation, and partnership models (joint
  appointments)

• Assist in facilitation of GAP analysis on the
  statewide level provide seed funding,
  statistical assistance, etc.

Dev Activities

• Plan and conduct a conference in the third year
  of the grant to present findings
• Publish and present reports on the work of the
  Institute, such as the Educational Assessment
  Report
• Preparation of annual and semi-annual reports to
  EDA
