PORTUGUESE PROGRAM FOR A SMOKING CESSATION

1. Introduction The aim of this poster is to
present the Portuguese Program for a Smoking
Cessation Network. As a result of the primary
prevention efforts in Portugal, the demand of
smoking cessation services increased a lot in the
recent years. Five years ago Portugal had six
smoking cessation programs and now we have more
than forty. In spite of this progress in the
supply of smoking cessation programs, Portugal
has still a need in quantity and quality of these
services. We want to improve the number of
smoking cessation programs offered in Hospitals
and Health Care Centres. We want also more
innovation, enlarging the collaboration of family
doctors, pharmacists and other health
professionals in smoking cessation activities. In
order to accomplish these goals, we are now
starting the implementation of a program with the
following objectives and activities 2.
Objectives - To raise smokers (and public
opinion) awareness of the cons of smoking and the
pros of non-smoking or smoking cessation - To
improve the knowledge of the smokers
expectations, motivations and needs - To study
health professionals attitudes on smoking and
smoking cessation - To train health
professionals in smoking cessation activities -
To develop the national network of smoking
cessation programs - To build a framework and
guidelines for the national smoking cessation
programs network.
3. Activities - Carry out a survey to study
smokers expectations and needs - Carry out a
survey to study health professionals smoking
behaviours, attitudes towards smoking / smoking
cessation and training needs - Set up a trainers
of trainers national team - Set up five
regional trainers teams - Training health
professionals to screen, assess, advice and
motivate smokers to quit (brief interventions) -
Training and supporting health professionals
involved in smoking cessation programs (intensive
interventions) - Promoting new smoking cessation
programs and supporting the existing ones -
Promoting non-smoking policies in workplaces,
schools and hospitals - Production materials for
awareness and clinical practice.
