Title: PSB-ISOLDE transfer line

1
PSB-ISOLDE transfer line
  • PPC 13/2/98
  • Mats Lindroos

2
History of optics changes
  • 1995
  • Change of final focus to spread beam over the
    entire target surface
  • First test with staggered beam
  • 1996
  • Change of BTM.BHZ10 and position of final
quadrupole doublet demanded a new optics
  • 1997
  • Staggered beam operational

3
History of beam observation
  • 1995
  • Mobile SEM-grid in ISOLDE target container
    available
  • and used for MDs
  • 1996
  • Two pick-ups installed in ISOLDE line
  • Separate transformers and SEM-grids installed
    before each ISOLDE target position
  • BLM surveillance
  • 1997
  • Beam observation with transformers and pick-ups
    possible for staggered beam
  • BLM surveillance application program

4
Mechanical modifications to ISOLDE line
  • 1996
  • ISOLDE target finding dipoles moved to permit
larger beam sweep range and to make place for
    SEM-grid and beam transformer
  • 1998
  • Support and alignment of SEM-grid before ISOLDE
    target positions to be modified

5
Improvements
  • ABS using existing pick-ups and scintillating
    screens
  • ABS using quadrupoles
  • Development work for BeamOptics started on
function which makes use of beam observation at
    ISOLDE SEM-grid
  • MD to understand discrepancy between theoretical
    opticals and used optics.
  • Study of four-ring staggered beam option

  • Pulsed elements in transfer line limits
    staggering to 600 microseconds duration
  • Fast dipole magnet (125 microseconds rise-time)
could be made and installed in the place of the
    RF-dipole
  • laminated or ferrite (exists)
  • A slow ejection bumper power supply (under
    construction) could be used

7
Wish list
  • Establish procedures so that experiments can ask
for change of intensity of delivered beam
  • Reduced radiation in PSB and transfer line
  • Saves ISOLDE targets
  • ISOLDE VISTAR
  • Is ISOLDE running?
  • Who is the EIC?
  • Who is the responsible physicist?
  • What state is the target in?
  • GPS/HRS?
  • Establish call list for beam requests when ISOLDE
    is down
