Knowledge Evidence
  • This information pack provides information on
school policies that relate to difficulties you
may face in your working relationships.
  • It explores the types of problems that may occur
and some strategies you might use to resolve
    conflicts.
  • It also discusses how to cover the scopes related
    to this unit.

4
Grievance Policy
  • All schools should have a Grievance Policy for
    staff.
  • This policy will be used when a member of staff
has a problem that cannot be resolved by any
    other means.

5
Grievance Policy (contd)
  • In your role as a teaching assistant there will
be incidents that occur in the workplace that
leave you feeling upset, angry or undervalued.
  • Reflect on a recent incident that made you feel
this way and then answer the questions on the
    next slide.

6
Grievance Policy (contd)
  • Did the incident occur because of any of the
    following
  • Poor communication between staff. (scope 2a)
  • Lack of collaborative skills in the team (4.1 k.b
    ii)
  • Ineffective working practices in the classroom
    (4.1 k.b vi)

7
Strategies To Resolve Conflicts
  • All of the following strategies could be used to
resolve conflicts that occur within the
    workplace.
  • Effective communication skills such as active
    listening
  • Training in team work
  • Staff meetings

8
Strategies To Resolve Conflicts (contd)
  • CPD (Continuous Professional Development)
opportunities to maintain and update staffs
professionalism in their particular role in the
    school
  • Informal meetings with staff to keep each other
updated and aware of individual workload
  • Formal meetings scheduled to resolve particular
    difficulties
  • Appraisal procedure

9
When To Use The Grievance Policy
  • Once all other means have been used to no effect
you have the right to start a Grievance procedure.

10
Grievance Policy 2
  • The Governing Body are responsible for
    establishing the Grievance Procedure.
  • The policy should include
  • The opportunity for an employee to put his or
    her own case
  • The right for the employee to be represented by
a fellow worker or trade union official
  • For the case to be considered fairly and
    impartially

11
Grievance Policy 2
  • The right to a reasonable timescale for
    resolution
  • For the absence of victimisation once the
    procedure is initiated
  • For the opportunity for a grievance to be
    resolved as quickly as possible
  • (taken from Bentham Rogers (2007) A teaching
assistants complete guide to achieving NVQ level
    2. Routledge. London. ISBN 0- 415 40341 3 )

12
Evidence Gathering
  • Your portfolio of evidence should include a
reflective account on an incident from your work
    practice of conflict.
  • This does not necessarily mean a difficult or
upsetting situation. It could be a problem you
have had getting your portfolio evidence signed
by the class teacher or fitting your assessor
    observations into the class timetable.
  • Explain what steps you took to resolve this
    situation.

13
Evidence Gathering (contd)
  • Read the k.b before you answer the question to
make sure you are including all of the key
    points.
  • Read through this resource and in your own words
describe the type of polices and procedures that
your school setting has to resolve conflicts.
  • REMEMBER your scopes can they be included in
    your answer?
