• At first, it seems safe to separate them.
• I advice every student to make an expertise
  choice.
• But too much distance creates a BIG issue
• Community gets disconnected, works are ignored.
• Momentum is lost.
• Technical correctness becomes hot and cold.
• 1) The best theory needs practice
• Newton quantum mechanics, queueing
• 2) The best practice needs theory
• To change the game, for benchmarking, for limits

What none of them need?

• Simulations
• Simulations disguised as experiments
• Simulations disguised as models
• Opacity
• data sets with infinitely complex properties
  beyond possible models
• Opinionated reviews

• Never underestimate the value of local
  knowledge
• If a networking question is important, there
  exist both
• 1) a model to find a theorem in a simple case
• 2) an experiment you can run to measure it
• If one of these is missing, you can probably
  forget about it.

Why it matters for future wireless research

• Can we come up with a layering technology?
• Other primitive
• Is cognitive radio a disguised network layer?
• Since many standards will emerge
• How to reduce energy spend by communication
  system?
• You cant ignore practical and theoretical
  aspects at any layer.
