Fluorinated surfactants are more hydrophobic,
rigid, and self assemble more readily than than
their hydrocarbon counterparts. This research
investigates the formation of spontaneous
vesicles of cationic/anionic surfactants
comprising fluorinated and mixed
fluorinated/hydrocarbon surfactants and explores
the potential to tailor the properties of the
fluorinated vesicle bilayers. Regions of
spontaneous vesicle formation have been
established for the fluorinated/fluorinated
cationic-anionic surfactants HFDPC()/SPFO(-)
and the hydrocarbon-fluorocarbon surfactant pair,
CPB()/SPFO(-), where CPB represents the
hydrocarbon analogue of HFDPC. Successful
transcriptive templating was demonstrated in the
fluorinated vesicle systems. Stable sols of
CPB/SPFO templated particles were produced.
The robustness of fluorinated/fluorinated
bilayers is suggested by the ability to template
at higher precursor to surfactant ratios than in
catanionic fluorinated/hydrocarbon vesicles while
maintaining the original aggregate shape.
