Title: Fiber Optical Networks

1
Fiber Optical Networks
  • A review on how fiber optic communication is used
to create optical fiber networks used by many
    telecommunications companies today

2

What is a network..?
  • In the world of applied science and engineering,
fiber optical cables are among one of the most
interesting and most advanced forms used for
communication, and also one of the fastest. In
order to understand how fiber optics work you
must learn what a a network is first.

3
A Network Is..?
  • In simple terms, a network refers to any
interconnected system or group, and are a key
link in the world of technology.

4
OPTICAL FIBRES ARE
  • Thin pieces of glass or plastic fiber which are
designed using the transmission of light guided
along transparent fibers, using reflection as a
means of transporting information, images etc.
Optical Fibers are NOT electric in nature.

5
History Of Fiber Optics In Technology
  • Fiber Optics appeared in the technology world in
the 1970s, first being used for the transmission
of images and later applied for use in internal
medical examinations among other things. Lowered
attenuations in fiber optic cables resulted in
the internet and other advanced applications of
fiber optic technology in the following decades.

6
Relay of Information...
  • The process of relaying information through fiber
optics is a waveguide process, and is quite
    simple...

7
Relay of Communication
  • First, you must create an optical transmitter to
convert an electrical signal into an optical
signal which is then relayed onto the fiber.
  • Semiconductor devices such as LEDs are commonly
    used as transmitters.

8
Relay of Communication
  • The signal is relayed and attenuated through the
fiber optic cable, containing images, text or
    other information. Amplifiers or optical
regenerators are used along the way to reduce
    distortion and boost light waves.

9
Relay Of Communication
  • An optical receiver is then used to receive the
electric signal and decodes the light signals,
preparing the information to be interpreted by a
    medium of some sort.

  • Cable television signals
  • Internet Signals
  • Telephone Signals
