2Mode 5/S Study GroupAgenda
- Study Group Charter (TOR) Review
- What is Mode 5 and Mode S?
- What is DoD Implementation Plan?
- What is the Impact on Simulations?
- What has been done so far in simulation?
- The Navy Mode 5/S IFF PDU vs DIS IFF PDU.
- Discuss and Agree on a plan of action.
- Discuss and Agree on a Tentative Schedule.
3Mode 5/S Study Group
- The Study Group shall execute the following
tasking - Establish a working relationship with the Mode
5/S Program Offices and Mode 5/S Technical
Support Offices and the Mode 5/S program offices
of each of the component services and other
government agencies. - Establish a working relationship with each of the
DoD MS organizations, and with the NATO MS
office to identify any simulation efforts that
have been planned or any work that has already
been performed on Mode 5/S simulation. - Identify key stakeholders (organizations and
companies). This also includes identifying any
work that has already been performed on Mode 5/S
simulation. - Publicize the SISO Mode 5/S IFF Study Group as
the main clearinghouse for Mode 5/S related to
simulation.
4Mode 5/S Study Group
- Identify all protocols and associated standards,
such as NATO STANAGs, that will need to be
updated for Mode 5/S simulation. Determine the
organizations and efforts that may be underway
already to upgrade those standards. - Set priorities for which protocol standards to
address first in light of ongoing efforts and the
user community for each standard. - Perform analysis and prepare a draft set of
proposed changes to the DIS Protocol, selected
HLA FOMs and SOMs and, possibly, the TENA
Protocol and submit those changes to the
appropriate protocol standards organizations. - Prepare a set of Mode 5 design guidelines based
on the proposed changes to the standards for use
by software engineers when upgrading simulations
and simulators.
5Mode 5/S Study Group
- Establish a Mode 5/S IFF Study Group Reflector
and Document Library with Mode 5/S information
for simulation developers and users. Hold regular
telecons with interested Mode 5/S parties. - Determine the need for a Mode 5/S IFF PDG as
needed for documentation that will not be
produced by an existing SISO PDG or other
standards organizations.
6Mode 5/S Study GroupWhat is Mode 5/S?
- Mode 5 is a military replacement for Mode 4. It
will include much more information on a platform.
- Mode S is an enhanced civilian mode that will
provide more information on platforms that the
present Mode 3/C system.
7Mode 5/S Study GroupWhat is DoD Implementation
Plan
The Air Force is planning to upgrade its
ATCRBS/IFF/Mark XII System (AIMS) to Mark XIIA.
This upgrade implements the next generation
secure IFF (Mode 5) and Mode S. The Air Force
has begun to field Mode S Elementary Surveillance
in order to meet EUROCONTROL requirements--using
equipment on the ESC/GAT ID/IQ catalogue. The
Air Force plans to begin fielding Mode 5 by
FY2008 in transponders, interrogators, and
combined interrogator/transponders for use in
both airborne and surface applications. All
equipment requires certification by the DoD AIMS
Program Office in accordance with technical
requirements set forth in DoD AIMS 03-1000. All
equipment must also meet the DoD AIMS 04-900
Crypto Interface Control Specification.
8Current Navy InitiativesMarch 2004
- MK XIIA Mode 5 Digital IFF
- Improved Capability, Coding, Crypto
- 3 New Data Fields allow unique ID down to
Bureau Number or Ship Hull Number - Expanded Data Handling GPS Capable
- Provides secure, cooperative, friendly platform
identification - Improves on the aging Mark XII Mode 4 IFF, using
technology advances in modulation, coding, and
cryptographic techniques to correct Mode 4
performance and security problems in the current
Mark XII waveform - Implemented through evolutionary upgrades to
modern digital Mark XII interrogators and
transponders, and through updates to the existing
IFF software code in platform warfare systems and
links

Adoption of SSR Mode S by EUROCONTROL To
overcome these deficiencies, SSR Mode S has been
developed which incorporates a selective and
individual aircraft address and data link
capability. Furthermore, it is able to transmit
certain aircraft parameters automatically with
the potential for system development to full
air/ground/air data link applications. It has
been specified by ICAO to be interoperable with
Mode 3/A and C and will progressively replace it
where required.
11Mode 5/S Study GroupImpact on Simulation
- Simulations that have IFF Transponder and
Interrogator models will need to be upgraded to
handle Mode 5 and S. - Live range data forwarded to sim players need
upgrades. - Simulation Protocols used to exchange IFF
information will need to be upgraded to add the
Mode 5 and S capability.
These efforts need to coincide with or be
implemented for simulation models and C4ISR and
weapons system simulators/simulation interfaces
prior to the real-world fielding of Mode 5/S
systems for systems that are players in simulated
training exercise.
12Mode 5/S Study GroupWhat has been done so far in
simulation?
- Navy BFTT ECP for new Mode 5/S IFF PDU.
- Other efforts -unknown.
13Mode 5/S Study GroupDIS IFF PDU
- Can the Layer Section be used for Mode 5 and S?
- Should both Mode 5 and S be able to be sent in a
single PDU?
