Preventing slip, trips and falls from vehicles

2
What is this about?
  • There are over 2000 fall from vehicle accidents
    reported to HSE each year
  • These are mostly falls from the load area of
lorries and vans, lorry cab steps and the fifth
    wheel catwalk of articulated vehicles
  • Major injuries are usually broken arms or legs,
    resulting in weeks off work
  • There are probably many more that are not
    reported

Falls from vehicles campaign

  • Vehicle buyers
  • Transport / Depot managers
  • Drivers and people who work on vehicles

6
Before you specify ask questions
  • Look at how people load and unload vehicles
  • Talk to drivers, Safety Representatives and your
Safety Advisor about what access is like on
    current vehicles.
  • Do they have any ideas for avoiding the need for
    access or improving equipment?
  • Refer to Information Sheets for advice

7
Designing vehicles to prevent falls
  • Health and safety legislation does apply
  • Access not covered by Road Vehicle (Construction
Use) law so often neglected e.g. by body
    builders and specifiers
  • Inspectors will discuss vehicle access with
  • Users
  • Manufacturers

8
Access to vehicles
  • Work at height on vehicles often viewed as
incidental presents an invisible risk during
  • Loading/ unloading (80 of falls!)
  • General access to vehicle - cab, trailer,
    flatbed, 5th wheel
  • Cleaning/maintenance
  • Make sure you have adequate risk assessments

9
General principles
  • Avoid need for work at height
  • If must go up prevent falls
  • On-vehicle systems
  • On-site systems
  • If cannot prevent falls reduce effects of falls
    e.g. PPE, training
  • Detail in Falls from Height and Workplace
    Transport pages of HSE website.

10
Avoid work at height
  • Try to avoid the need for people to work at
    height where you can
  • Specify controls which can be operated from
    ground level
