Longitude and Latitude - Definition
  • Latitude The distance north or south of the
    Equator
  • Longitude The distance east or west of the
    Prime Meridian
  • Latitude and longitude intersect, forming a grid
that covers the East and helps us to locate
    points on it.

5
Latitude
  • Equator line of 0 degrees latitude, the
starting point. The North Pole is 90 degrees
north, South Pole is 90 degrees south.
  • The latitude of every point in between is a
degree, north or south, from 9 to 90 degrees.
  • 1 degree is 69 miles
  • Latitude circles are also called parallels of
latitude. They get smaller the farther they are
    from the Equator.

6
Longitude
  • Lines of longitude, meet meet at the poles are
    know as meridians.
  • Prime Meridian, runs through Greenwich England,
    is 0 degrees longitude.
  • Longitude is measured in degrees, east or west of
    the Prime Meridian.
  • ½ the work is measured in degrees of east
longitude up to 180 degrees and the other half is
degrees or west longitude up to 180 degrees.

7
Measurement
  • For greater precision, degrees of latitude and
longitude are divided into 60 minutes, symbolized
by and minutes are divided into 60 seconds,
    symbolized by .
  • Maps often have parallels and meridians. The
latitude and longitude of a point are called
    coordinates.
