Title: EPA, the Global Earth Observation System of Systems

1
EPA, the Global Earth Observation System of
Systems Data Sharing
  • From more and better data
  • To better decisions
  • To societal benefits

2
  • For the future of environmental protection,
  • EPA needs to become a much larger user of
    remotely sensed earth observation data,
  • Through the use of its decision support tools,
the observation, modeling and information needs
    are being defined, and
  • Partnerships with the Earth Observation community
    are being sought.
  • The challenge is to be Innovative.

3
EPAs Niche
  • Both User and Provider of data/models
  • Information Linkages from Observations to all
    Nine Societal Benefit Areas
  • EPAs Connections with State/Local/Tribal
    Environmental Agencies
  • Environmental Health Decision-Making
  • Assessment, Regulatory Action, Guidance,
    Uncertainty, Accountability, etc.
  • Report on the Environment and Indicators

User Engagement
7
The Novice User
  • science-to-policy analysts
  • working on specific issues that fall within one
    or more SBAs
  • not SOA- or GEOSS-experienced
  • looking for any and all observational data
    relevant to their issues
  • easily find it and view it

The Novice User
  • For the Novice User
  • The GEOSS Common Infra-structure is not user
    friendly
  • Metadata is not useful
  • Components need to provide sample data sets for
    easy viewing geographically
