a man after Gods own heart

How long will you grieve

• Samuel in mourning over Sauls rejection and
  disobedience
• Told to fill his horn with oil and go

He lookedand thought

• But the LORD said to Samuel, Do not look at his
  appearance or at the height of his stature,
  because I have rejected him for God sees not as
  man sees, for man looks at the outward
  appearance, but the LORD looks at the heart.

There remains yet the youngest

• David
• Ruddy
• Can mean reddish hair or complexion or physical
  prowness
• Beautiful eyes
• Handsome Appearance

the Spirit of the LORD

• Departed from Saul
• Evil spirit terrorized him
• Spirit of affliction, persecution melancholy etc
• Servants advised a musician would help
• When David played he would be refreshed

• Came mightily upon David
• This Spirit did not keep David from sinning, just
  as it had not kept Saul from erring

Choose a man for yourselves

• Scale-armor (mail) which weighed 5000 shekels of
  bronze (about 200 pounds)

  and an iron head which weighed 600 shekels of
  iron (about 25 pounds)

• No one dared to fight for 40 days, in fact they
  ran away from him

What was he thinking?

• Saul/soldiers
• Whole war depended on this one fight
• Goliath was VERY prepossessing
• Knew their limitations with ability and weaponry
• Maybe there was another way to win the battle
• Worried about Davids youth and inexperience

• Goliath
• Had faith in his sheer physical presence
• Knew he was larger and stronger than anyone else
  and they would be afraid
• Knew their limitations with ability and weaponry
• Was insulted by Davids approach

• David
• Insulted by Goliaths taunt of the armies of the
  living God
• Despised Goliath as anuncirumcised Philistine
• Was victorious over lions and bears
• Had faith that the LORD would deliver him

• David
• Knew the whole war depended on this one fight
• Knew his ability and strengths
• Knew the LORD would deliver Goliath into his
  hands so that they would know there is a GOD in
  Israel

Recognition

• Up to this time David was going back and forth
  between Gibeah where he served Saul (harp
  playing) and Bethlehem where he worked at home
  (shepherding)
• David removes Goliaths head and takes his
  weapons
• David is brought before Saul after the victory
  and is indelibly recognized for his achievements
