Title: Warm Up Activity: The Ship of Theseus

1
Warm Up Activity The Ship of Theseus
  • Take a moment to read The Ship of Theseus.
  • Make notes on paper in order to prepare to
    respond to the questions posed.

2
Question 1So, was the ship still the original
ship?
  • Yes
  • The ship is what the shipmates aboard the vessel
the vessel call it. We can assume that they still
    all call it Theseus.
  • The ship is what everyone knows it by. We can
assume that all of the letters that the shipmates
have sent to their familes say things like "yes,
I am still board Theseus, so everyone calls the
    ship by this name.
  • No
  • A ship is a whole made up of parts. If you
replace the parts it changes the whole.

3
Question 2If the two ships park side by side
which one is the ship of Theseus?
  • The old ship is Theseus. The ship is what we call
    it.
  • The new ship made up of the original Theseus
parts is the real Theseus. The ship is the
material parts that make it up.

Socrates and Plato continue to be relevant to
    modern thought and society.

Why study Philosophy?
  • Philosophy is the starting point of all sciences.
  • Before physics, sociology, mathematics, and other
    scientific schools separated themselves into
    individual sciences, there was philosophy.
  • Greeks were the first to document systematic
definitions of their surrounding world without
    relying on the gods.

Greek Philosophers
  • Socrates
  • Plato

Socrates
  • Lived in and around Athens
  • He was Platos teacher
  • He did not write anything, all recorded work is
from students, such as Aristophanes and Plato.
  • He was the 1st philosopher to focus on the
questions of ordinary living rather than the
    nature of reality.
  • He was put on trial and sentenced to death for
impieties against state and for corrupting
    Athenian youth.
  • He developed the Socratic Method.

9
Plato
  • After death of his mentor Socrates, he shifted
away from political ambitions and turned to
    philosophy.
  • Founded the Academy in 388 B.C.
  • He wrote in dialogue form and his main character
    was often Socrates.
  • Wrote The Republic greatest work on political
