Title: XRAY PRODUCTION

1
X-RAY PRODUCTION
2
Purpose of x-ray tube
  • Take electrons created at the filament,
accelerate them and them focus a large number of
electrons on a small target (anode) with high
    velocity.

3
HEAT PRODUCTION
  • Over 99 of the kinetic energy required to
produce x-rays is converted to heat
  • Only 1 of the kinetic energy is converted to
    x-rays

4
ELECTRON TARGET INTERACTIONS
  • Characteristic Radiation
  • Projectile electrons interact with an inner-shell
electron of the target rather than the outer
    shell electron
  • Bremsstrahlung Radiation
  • Projectile electrons looses its kinetic energy
when passing close to the nucleus and its path is
diverted or the initial path travel is slowed
    down.

5
  • When projectile electrons interact with target
electrons, the kinetic energy of the electrons
are transformed into thermal energy (heat) and
    electromagnetic energy (x-rays)

6
X-ray Emission Spectrum
  • A graph of the x-ray energy in an x-ray beam
  • Pg 147

7
Factors affecting emission spectrum
  • mA
  • kVp
  • Added filtration
  • Target material
  • Voltage Waveform
