5Routes of chemical exposure
- The majority of toxic substances enter the body
through breathing - Other means include absorption, ingestion, and
injection
6Routes of chemical exposure
- Chemical exposures are divided into two groups
- acute
- chronic
- Symptoms from acute exposures occur during or
shortly after exposure to a high concentration
7Routes of chemical exposure
- Symptoms from chronic exposures occur over longer
periods of time after exposures to low
concentrations

9Responsibilities
- First responders at the Awareness Level must be
able to recognize a hazardous substance
release
Awareness Level

consistent with the local emergency response plan - Understanding the potential hazards of a
hazardous release site
Awareness Level

- understand the potential outcomes associated
with an emergency created when hazardous
substances are present
Awareness Level
