What is a Community of Practice?
Community of Practice (CoP) are groups of
people who share a concern, a set of problems, or
a passion about a topic and who deepen their
knowledge and expertise in this area by
interacting on an ongoing basis.
A CoP is not just a web site, a database, or a
collection of best practices. It is a group of
people who interact, learn together, build
relationships, and in the process to develop a
sense of belonging and mutual commitment
10
Three Fundamental Elements of CoP
The Domain creates common ground and a sense of
common identity.
The Community creates the social fabric of
learning. A strong community fosters interactions
and relationships based on mutual respect and
trust. It encourages the willingness to share
ideas, expose ones ignorance, ask difficult
questions, and listen carefully.
The Practice is a set of frame works, ideas,
tools, information, styles, language, stories,
and documents that community members share.
Where as the domain denotes the topic the
community focuses on, the practice is the
specific knowledge the community develops,
shares, and maintains.
