DEFINE ILLUSTRATION
  • artwork that helps make something clear or
    attractive
  • a visual representation (a picture or diagram)
that is used to make some subject more pleasing
    or easier to understand
  • a picture designed to elucidate and decorate a
story, poem, or other piece of writing
  • usually describes line art drawings, but can also
be used to describe photographs and other
    illustrative artwork

4
WHY ILLUSTRATON DESIGN?
  • Fundamentally, good illustration starts with
    sound design.
  • Because, by definition, illustrators create
representations to help promote an idea,
product, market, etc., illustrators must conform
    to the principles of design.
  • A good designer does not necessarily have to be a
good illustrator but a good illustrator is
    always a good designer.

MISSION STATEMENT
  • The Bachelor of Fine Arts in Illustration
Design will produce graduates who develop and
    produce images for visual communications.
Graduates will apply skills from communication
design and the fine arts and develop the creative
    vision necessary for professional success.
  • Graduates will integrate communications goals
and visual messages as part of a creative team.
The programs curriculum provides a foundation
in drawing, painting and illustration techniques
for both traditional and emerging media as well
as a working knowledge of graphic design
    production.

18
WHATS NEW DIFFERENT
  • FUNDAMENTALS OF PAINTINGStudents will begin the
study and use of paint media to represent form,
value and color and the manipulation of pigment
    on a prepared surface.
  • DIGITAL PHOTOGRAPHY FOR ILLUSTRATIONStudents
will generate their own photographs for
reference. Students will research and assemble
props for photo shots and archive their work.
  • ILLUSTRATIONThis course will introduce students
to the basic principles of illustration. Various
methods and functions of illustration will be
explored. Students will learn the role of
illustration in the design process and apply that
    knowledge to projects.
  • SPECIALTY ILLUSTRATIONStudents will explore and
execute descriptive representation art applied to
subject matter such as technical, scientific,
    medical, and legal illustration.

19
WHATS NEW DIFFERENT
  • ADVANCED DRAWINGThis course is a continuation of
the skills introduced in Fundamentals of Drawing
with an emphasis on composition, rendering, and
modeling techniques. The course explores the use
of various color, and black and white media.
  • INTERMEDIATE PAINTINGThis course is a
    continuation of Fundamentals of Painting.
Emphasis will include painting the human form,
using light and expanding the repertoire of
    techniques.
  • EDITORIAL ILLUSTRATIONStudents will produce
    illustrations that interpret written content.
Research and personal references along with an
exploration of appropriate media, imagery and
style will support the interpretation of the
    authors message.
  • CONCEPTUAL ILLUSTRATIONStudents will research
current evolving cultures both domestic and
international. Students will then apply these
images to create original illustrations in the
genre of fantasy, humor, cartoons, and editorial
    commentary.

WHATS MORE!
  • Illustration is a cross-over discipline.
  • Illustration is drawing. And drawing is the
    foundation of visual representation.
  • Storyboarding, for instance, a type of
visualization, is at its foundation telling a
    story through rendering.
  • An interior design is at its foundation a
    rendering.
  • An animated character is at its foundation a
    rendering.

23
MORE CROSS-OVER
  • Currently at AiW we have two general drawing
classes, Basic Drawing and Life Drawing.
  • For Animation, and Game Art Design majors, we
offer Advanced Drawing for Animation, and
    Character Object Design.
  • Many of the new Illustration classes can
cross-over into Animation, and Game Art Design.
The Illustration program will offer further
opportunities for these majors to concentrate on
background scenes, a crucial component of the
    animators craft.
  • Many Interior Design majors will equally benefit
    from the new Illustration program.
