About this Collection There are many real-time
aerosol datasets on the Web that can aid the
understanding of dust storms, fires, and
pollution episodes The modest purpose of this
annotated picture book and web links is to inform
the community on the relevant data resources This
resource collection is maintained by R. Husar at
CAPITA but its content is contributed by the
community members.

Surface Visual Range over the Continents

• Visibility is recorded at 7000 synoptic stations
  hourly
• NOAA NCDC archives the Global Summary of the Day
  (SOD) data

The surface extinction coefficient can be
estimated from Koschmieder formula. The data are
filtered for fog, precipitation, RHgt90 and bad
stations.
