  • A part of speech explains how a word is used.
    There are 8 parts of speech. They are
  • Nouns
  • Pronouns
  • Adjectives
  • Verbs
  • Adverbs
  • Prepositions
  • Conjunctions
  • Interjections
  • In this class we are going to study the six most
    common parts of speech, on which you must take
    notes in your handout.

Nouns
  • A noun is a person, place, thing or idea.
  • Some examples of nouns are
  • Ms. Hein
  • Mrs. Marko
  • New Jersey
  • Cat
  • Dog
  • Love
  • War
  • Snowflake

Pronouns Pronouns are slightly different from
nouns. Pronouns are words that replace nouns to
make sentences simpler.Some examples of
pronouns are
  • That
  • This
  • Who
  • What
  • Myself
  • Herself
  • He
  • She
  • It
  • You
  • His
  • Mine
  • Theirs
  • Ours

It is easier to say, They brought me flowers,
instead of, Jeff, Michael and Timothy brought me
flowers.

Adjectives
  • An adjective is a word that describes a noun,
    like in the sentence, This is a heavy book.
    The word, heavy, the adjective, describes the
    noun, the book.
  • Some examples of adjectives are
  • Bright
  • Orange
  • Small
  • Large
  • Scary
  • Loud
  • Silent
  • Jolly

Verbs
  • A common verb is the verb, to be. The
    following are this type of verb
  • Am
  • Are
  • Is
  • Were
  • Was
  • Has been
  • A verb is a word that shows actions or states of
    being.
  • Some examples of verbs are
  • Run
  • Jump
  • Swim
  • Skip
  • Hurry
  • Have
  • Has
  • Has run
  • Have laughed

Adverb
  • An adverb is a word that describes a verb, or an
    action, as in, I ran quickly. Quickly, the
    adverb, describes the action, running.
  • The following are examples of common adverbs
  • Sadly
  • Commonly
  • Slowly
  • Unfortunately
  • Finally
  • Luckily

Conjunctions
  • A conjunction is a word that links nouns. An
    example of this is in the sentence, I like
    soccer and hockey. The word, and, the
    conjunction, links the two nouns, soccer and
    hockey.
  • Some more examples of conjunctions are
  • But
  • Or
  • Either
  • Neither
  • Nor
  • So
