The History of Halloween
3
The Knowledge!
  • Halloween had its beginnings in an ancient,
Celtic festival of the dead. The festival
observed at this time was called Samhain.
  • All Hallows Eve became Hallow Evening, which
    became Hallowe'en.
  • Halloween or Hallowe'en is a popular tradition
celebrated on the night of October 31, most often
by children dressing in costumes and going
door-to-door collecting candy, sweets, fruit, and
    other treats.
  • To this day, witches, ghosts, and skeleton
figures of the dead are among the favorite
    disguises.

4
The Knowledge!
  • Halloween is a holiday of many mysterious
customs, but each one has a history, or at least
    a story behind it.
  • People believe, ghosts of the dead were able to
    travel into the otherworld.
  • People continued to celebrate Halloween as a time
    of the wandering dead.
  • Traditional Halloween symbols (witches, black
cats, pumpkins, candles, masks, parties and
pranks) appeared in the U.S. during the late
    1800's.

5
The Knowledge!
  • Trick-or-Treating originated in Ireland and
Britain, but was found as far south as Italy.
  • Pumpkins were cut with faces representing demons
and were originally intended to frighten away
    evil spirits.
  • The carved pumpkin, lit by a candle inside, is
one of Halloween's most important symbols in
America, and is commonly called a
    jack-o'-lantern.
  • Halloween is a time of magic. If people hold a
mirror on Halloween and walk backwards down the
stairs to the basement, the face that appears in
the mirror will be their next lover.

6
Halloween Superstitions!
  • Knocking on wood keeps bad luck away.
  • If you hear footsteps trailing close behind you
on Halloween night, do not to turn around to see
who it is, for it may be Death himself! To look
Death in the eye, according to ancient folklore,
is a sure way to hasten your own demise.
  • Put your clothes on inside out and walk backwards
on Halloween night to meet a witch.
  • You should walk around your home three times
backwards and counterclockwise before sunset on
Halloween to ward off evil spirits.

7
Halloween Superstitions!
  • It is believed that if a person lights a new
orange colored candle at midnight on Halloween
and lets it burn until sunrise, he or she will be
    the recipient of good luck.
  • If you see a spider on Halloween, it could be the
spirit of a dead loved one who is watching you.
  • A person born on Halloween can both see and talk
    to spirits.
