Background
  • LPA Task Force created in Jan. 2007
  • Charge
  • Review policies for access to facilities and
    computers
  • Recommend changes that will improve library
    environment for study research
  • Membership Michelle Baildon, Anna Gold,
    Stephanie Hartman, Irene Mazor, Christine
    Quirion, Howard Silver, Stephen Skuce

Process
  • Solicited feedback from across the library system
  • Vetted early ideas for review and revision
  • Approval from PSLG, LC, and SC
  • Support from FCLS and Provost

Recommendations
  • Revise use guidelines to reflect priority of MIT
    community and privilege of library use in support
    of scholarly activity
  • Reduce unrestricted access to public workstations
  • Work with Campus Police to establish library
    community police officer
  • Assess the impact of these recommendations to
    determine if further actions are necessary

Implementation
  • Implementation Team formed Dec. 2007

  • Update policies, web pages, brochures, signage,
    training materials

New Policy
  • Use of the Libraries is a privilege
  • Access normally limited to meeting a specific
    need for the scholarly, research, or educational
    materials and services available in the MIT
    Libraries
  • Current MIT faculty, students, and staff have
    priority
  • Continue to fulfill our obligation as a selective
    US Federal Depository Library

Computer Use
  • For educational and research purposes, with
    priority given to MIT community
  • Recreational use by outside users is prohibited
  • Display of sexually explicit material prohibited
  • Use of the network for commercial activity
    prohibited

Community Police Officer
  • Currently only one community police officer
    position on campus
  • Fits in to long-term strategy for policing on
    campus
  • Full and enthusiastic support from Police Dept.
  • 2 yr. pilot
  • Office in Hayden

Role Responsibilities
  • Evaluate and problem solve issues related to the
    security of library patrons, staff, and property,
    taking appropriate preventative and protective
    measures.
  • Patrol and monitor all library facilities in
    order to identify, prevent and respond to
    violations of the librarys rules of conduct,
    policies and procedures.
  • Develop a positive continuing conversation with
    other officers and MIT personnel in regards to
    ongoing activities or problems in the Libraries.
  • Responsible for a high degree of public contact
    and community policing.
  • Serve as a liaison between library staff, police
    agencies and the public.
  • Explain rules and regulations to library visitors
    and solicit cooperation and compliance.
  • Identify and report security and/or safety
    concerns.
  • Identify and recommend procedures and methods to
    prevent property loss and damage.
  • Conduct personal safety seminars for library
    staff.
