Title: Weapons/Proliferation

1
Weapons/Proliferation
  • Foreign Policy

2
Issues involved
  • Regulating nuclear weapons
  • The Nuclear Market
  • Biological and Chemical Weapons
  • Conventional weapons
  • Nuclear Bunker Buster

3
Solutions
  • After WWII many nations were developing Nuclear
    weapons.
  • The UN Nuclear Nonproliferation Treaty granted
access to Nuclear technology for any country that
would use it for peaceful uses not weapons.

4
U.S. cooperation
  • 1996 , more than fifty members of the United
Nations signed the Comprehensive Test Ban Treaty,
agreeing to terminate all forms of nuclear
explosions except for certain maintenance tests
  • 1991, after cold war United States and Russia
worked together and signed the Arms Reduction
Treaty. This reduced the amount of nuclear
    weapons made by both sides
  • In 2002 The U.S. and Russia signed the Strategic
    Offensive Reduction Treaty, lowering active
    warheads from 6,000 to 1,700 and 2,200.

5
Roles
  • President-puts out suggestions, treaties, new
weapons etc. Discusses weapon issues with other
countries. Can issue a 30 day invasion
  • State Department-meets with other foreign
    officials, deals with security issues
    national/foreign.
  • Congress-everything needs to be passed through
them, they have to vote for documents before they
can become official, and the only one that can
    declare war.

6
Opinion
  • We agree with the policy. We think that with the
unstable state of some nations that it is
important to have the most sophisticated weapons.
We think that they should cut unnecessary
spending and use the money for different causes
