Kepler 3 laws of planetary motion

• 1st Law The orbits of the planets are ellipses,
  with the Sun at the one focus of the ellipse
• Kepler was a student of Tycho Brahe
• Brahe had his nose cut off in a fight
• Had many dissagreements with Kepler

• Idea That inertia and gravity are the main
  factors causing the elliptical orbits of
  planetary motion
• Law of Gravity the attraction between two
  objects

Newtons Laws of Motion

• 1st Inertia An object at rest tends to stay at
  rest, and an object in motion tends to stay in
  motion (in a straight line), unless acted on by
  an outside force
• 2nd Acceleration
• Acceleration Net Force / Mass
• 3rd Law of Action Reaction every action, has
  an equal and opposite reaction
• Ex. Jump up legs are pushing down
• Ex. Paddle In a kayak pull water back, kayak is
  propelled forward

• Reaction engine- rearward blast of exploding
  gases causes the rocket to shoot forward
• Thrust the force of this forward movement
• Chinese first to use as weapons of war

Escape velocity

• The velocity required for a rocket to escape
  Earths gravitational pull
• Konstantin Tsiolkovsky-father of modern rocketry
• 1890 At 17 yrs old, began thinking about space
  flight, livng in space, rocket design problems
• Inspired by Jules Verne Journey to the Center of
  the Eath and 20 Thousand leagues under the sea
• Predicted that a huge reaction engine would be
  the way that someday a vehicle would leave
  Earths gravitational pull
• Also, predicted that current fuels, solid or
  gunpowder would not be the fuel used.
• Gunpowder cannot maintain the thrust needed to
  escape

Herman Oberth

• Father of Space Travel
• At age 11, inspired by Jules Verne, From the
  Earth to the Moon read 6xs and knew by heart
• By 14 yrs old, envisioned the recoil rocket
  propel itself through space by expelling exhaust
  gases (from liquid fuel)
• 1922, theorized rocket stages to achieve escape
  velocity
• Developed the V-2 rocket with Werner von Braun

• Inspired by Jules Verne and H.G. Wells
• Read, Oberths book By Rocket to Space
  decided to learn trigonometry, calculus to
  understand the physics of rockets
• German rocket scientist with Oberth, developed
  the V-2 Rocket
