  • The family was the basic unit of Roman society.
  • Patriarchal societyUsually the father was the
    head of the household (or oldest male).
  • The ideal Roman woman was loving, dutiful,
    dignified, and Strong.

  • Changing role of women Roman women played a
    larger role in society than Greek women.
    Eventually, they even owned businesses and had
    large political influence.
  • Education Both sexes learned to read and write.
    Even the lowest classes could write. This is
    evidenced by graffiti found on walls around the
    city.
  • Religion The Romans adopted their gods from the
    Etruscans, who had been influenced by the Greeks.

Expansion in Italy
  • Romes armies expanded and conquered first the
    Etruscans and then the Greeks to the south.
  • Citizen soldierssimilar to Greece, comprised the
    army. The basic military unit was the Legion.
  • Soldiers fought without pay but were given
    rewards in the form of gifts. Discipline was
    extremely harshcowardice and/or fleeing from
    battle resulted in the death of 1 out of every 10
    men.
  • Conquered lands were generally treated with
    justice.
  • Protection was in the form of garrisons
    throughout the land. Unification was by roads,
    some of which are still in use.
