Title: Disease

1
Disease
  • Viruses

2
Vocabulary
  • Disease
  • Disease is an illness that interferes with an
    organisms ability to function normally.
  • Disease can be caused by prokaryotes, viruses,
fungi, protists, worms, insects, and dietary
    deficiencies
  • Diseases are spread through droplet infection,
unprotected sex, poor hygiene, undercooked food,
water, by animals such as mosquitoes and ticks
    etc.

3
Vocabulary
  • Pathogen disease causing agent for infectious
    diseases
  • Host organism infected with the pathogen
  • Antibodies proteins produced by host to
    destroy/ kill pathogens.
  • Immunity -ability of host to cope with/fight off
    pathogen
  • Antibiotics substances that kill or inhibit thr
growth of microorganisms. They are not effective
    against viral infections.

4
Vaccines Fight Viruses
  • Vaccines prevent disease. The host gets a
weakened or dead pathogen so that the body makes
antibodies against it without getting sick.
  • Vaccines were discovered by an English doctor
Edward Jenner in 1796.He developed a vaccine for
    small pox.

5
  • Ex. pathogen flu virus
  • Host human body
  • Vaccine flu shot
  •    we dont get the same flu twice because the
antibodies remember it, therefore we are
immune/resistant to that strain of flu virus

6
What are Viruses?
  • Viruses are strands of hereditary material
    surrounded by a protein coat
  • They are considered non-living
  • They can be pathogenic
  • Viruses also can contribute to society as they
are a tool used by biologists to help cure
    diseases in gene therapy
  • Host Specific
  • Viruses are very clever and can mutate easily,
also they are masters of disguise

7
Viral Structure
  • Viruses have a protein shell that encloses its
    hereditary material called a capsid.
  • Viruses may have tails and tail fibers

8
Viral Reproduction
  • Viruses that infect bacteria are called
    Bacteriophages.
  • Viruses can have a
  • A Lytic Life style
  • or
  • (2) A Lysogenic Life style

9
Viral Multiplication/Lifecycle
10
Gene Therapy
  • Gene therapy involves these basic steps
  • Doing research to find the gene involved in the
    genetic disorder.
  • Cutting out the normal gene enzymes are used to
    do this.
  • Making many copies of the gene.
  • Putting copies of the normal gene into a virus
(The viral DNA has been removed).
  • The virus delivers the normal gene into the cells
of the person with the genetic disorder.

11
11 Body/Organs Systems
  • SLIC MEN R RED
  • S skeletal R -
    respiratory
  • L lymphatic/Immune R - reproductive
  • I integumentary (skin) E - excretory
  • C circulatory D - digestive
  • M muscular
  • E endocrine (hormones)
  • N - nervous

Dietary Diseases
  • Scurvy is a disease caused by vitamin C deficiency
