Introduction - 1

• Word Sabbath first appears in Exodus 1623,
  regarding quails and manna in Wilderness
• Provision of food served as test for Israel God
  provided a certain quota each day to test
  them 164b, 23-28
• God humbled you, and allowed you to hunger, and
  fed you with manna that He might make you know
  that man shall not live by bread alone, but by
  every word that proceeds from the mouth of God
  Deut. 82-3 cf. Matt. 44

• Hence, made known at Sinai cannot mean
  bringing to their remembrance something long
  established.

• Sabbatarians argue that the Sabbath was
  instituted at Creation, citing Gen. 22-3
• They assume mankind charged with observing the
  Sabbath from the beginning of creation
• They assume blessed and sanctified it means men
  were required to observe it at that time
• They assume Sabbath law, given at that time, is
  still binding on all mankind.
• None of these can be established from Scripture

• Because of such assumptions, observing the
  Sabbath is still a controversial subject
  Sabbatarians insist it is binding on Christians
• We propose to show that keeping the Sabbath is
  not binding on anybody today
• However, we believe certain principles connected
  with Sabbath keeping are worthy of our
  consideration

Sabbath Law Given to Israel 1

• At Sinai, command to observe Sabbath given
  Remember Sabbath, to keep it holy Ex. 208
• Seventh day is the Sabbath of the Lord no work
  to be done on that day Ex. 206-7
• Therefore, children of Israel are to work six
  days and rest on the seventh Ex. 209-11
• He blessed and hallowed it Ex. 2011
• God sanctified the seventh day because in it
  He rested after Creation Gen. 23

• After wandering in wilderness for 40 years, Law
  repeated to next generation, to be observed in
  the same way, but as a day of remembering
• Remember that you were a slave in the land of
  Egypt, and that the Lord your God brought you out
  of by a mighty hand and an outstretched arm
  therefore the Lord your God commanded you to keep
  the Sabbath Day Deut. 515

• Both reasons for keeping the Sabbath emphasize
  mans dependence upon God
• Man created and given dominion Gen. 126
• Given honorable work of cultivating and keeping
  the Garden, with privilege of eating of every
  tree except one Gen. 216-17
• Disobedience brought the curse of multiplied
  obstacles to the serpent (Gen. 314-15), the
  woman (316), Adam (317-19) mankind was driven
  away from the tree of life (322-24).

• Fulfilling promise to Abraham Gen. 1513-16
• Israel was freed by loving and Mighty God
• Sabbath, a day of rest, and constant reminder of

• Sabbath a sign between God and Israel to be
  observed in all their generations 3112-14, 17

What Sabbath Keeping Involved 1

• The Sabbath, was a day of rest for you, son,
  daughter, servants, cattle, stranger Ex. 2010
• Man has six days to work work a noble thing
  Idle hands make devils workshop
• If wont work shouldnt eat 2 Thess. 311-12
• If will not provide for own man is worse than an
  unbeliever 1 Tim. 58
• Command says man should not work all the time
  needs time off to rest body and mind and spend
  time in other worthwhile pursuits

  restricted to Jewish worship in warm climate
• No fire kindled in dwellings Ex. 1622
• Manna not baked or boiled that day Ex. 1623
• Man gathered wood, put to death Num. 1532
• Burdens not to be borne Jer. 1721-27
• Men wished Sabbath to be over so they could go on
  in unjust business practices Amos 85
• No buying or selling permitted in Jerusalem by
  Nehemiah Neh. 1015, 31

• Jeremiah prophesied establishment of a new
  covenant Jer. 3131-34 cf. Heb. 87-13
• About 600 BC, predicted the covenant made at
  Sinai would become obsolete cf. Heb. 813
• It was ready to vanish away cf. Heb. 813
• Paul draws distinction between the Old, as the
  ministration of condemnation, and the New, as

  accustomed to regular meetings

• The Sabbath was made for man, and not man for
  the Sabbath Mark 227

  regeneration, and to assemble to worship and
  remember blessings we have received from God
  is always appropriate and needed by men

  Sabbath, but the Lords Day
• Do we think of it as His day, or our day?
• Do we use it to honor the Lord, or for our own
  selfish interests?
• It should be a day in which we pause to reflect
  upon God and His goodness and mercy, to remember
  His Son who died that we might live

• Is a couple of hours on Sunday morning and
  another on Sunday evening too much to ask?
• Do you even thank God for your daily bread?
• Are you one of His children, and on speaking
  terms with God?
