Title: Mosses
1Bryophytes
2- Mosses are Bryophytes, nonvascular plants that
grow only in moist environments.
3- A moss attaches to the ground by small rhizoids
(RY zoydz). These are rootlike structures found
in bryophytes.
4- Rhizoids are not true roots because they do not
have vascular tissue to carry water.
5These processes are slow and support only a small
plant.
- glucose travels between cells by diffusion.
- Water travels through a moss by osmosis,
6Moss Life Cycle
7In the first stage, spores develop into separate
male and female gametophytes.
8The male gametophyte grows spermproducing sex
organs, and the female gametophyte grows
egg-producing sex organs.
9The sperm cells use water from rain or dew to
swim to the egg cell and fertilize it. The
fertilized egg remains in the female sex organ
and develops into a sporophyte.
10The sporophyte, still attached to the female
gametophyte, grows a stalk with a capsule on the
end.
11In the capsule, cell divisions produce spores
that will be released to continue the cycle.
