Security is an important aspect of university
life and the university community should be fully
committed to achieving the aims set out in this
policy. STAFF and STUDENTS need to work together
to create and maintain a SAFE and SECURE
environment

The KEY objective, in security terms, is to be
AWARE of all UNAUTHORISED persons who may be in
or on university property
4SECURITY POLICY DOCUMENTSECURITY SECTION AIMS
The Security Section will
- ESTABLISH a realistic assessment of the level of
risk on campus - OUTLINE procedures to deal with reports of crime,
threats and damage - IDENTIFY trends and react quickly to remove or
reduce risk - RAISE security awareness in the university
community without engendering fear
5SECURITY POLICY DOCUMENTAUTHORISED PERSONS
- AUTHORISED persons can be classified as, staff,
students, contractors, statutory visitors or
visitors. ALL such persons should carry proof of
identity and produce this if requested. ALL
OTHERS ARE UNAUTHORISED - AUTHORISED persons should be alert to any
unauthorised person on university property and
appropriate steps should be taken to report
suspicious activity to the security section as
soon as possible - Any UNAUTHORISED person found on university
property should be asked to justify their
presence and to account for any property in their
possession - The UNIVERSITY reserves the right to refuse entry
to any UNAUTHORISED person
6OPPORTUNITY FOR CRIME 80 of crime is committed
by the OPPORTUNIST This implies that many crimes
could be PREVENTED
Therefore
A few elementary precautions, which make it more
difficult for the criminal, MAY prevent you from
becoming a VICTIM
7INCIDENT REPORTING
- Very serious incidents where urgency of
attendance and action is required should be
reported to the police, fire or ambulance
services - This can be done by using (9) 999 or by calling
2222 on an internal line - Other incidents and or suspicious occurrences
should be reported to security by calling 50 2257
(This is a 24-hour line) - In any event security section personnel wish to
be informed of ALL incidents or suspicious
